Earlobe fillers are officially a thing

Earlobe fillers are officially a thing

Does your earlobe spring to mind when you think of fillers? Me neither. Cheeks and lips? Sure. But earlobes? Never.

It’s an actual thing though, and was recently thrust into the spotlight when TheReal Housewives Of Atlanta star Kim Zolciak-Biermann revealed she’d had the procedure.

Kim’s daughter Brielle revealed the news on twitter. “My mom gets filler in her ears because her diamond earrings are too heavy….. #richpeopleproblems,” she tweeted. Kim then confirmed the procedure. “Just my right ear that I use to talk on the phone (my lobe is pulled down slightly) so rather than have surgery to fix it, a couple years ago Dr Ourian put a tad of filler in the lobe and my earring stays straight up instead of facing downward,” she wrote.

What is it?

Filler is a quick solution to help plump up and lift the earlobe. It only requires a few injections of hyaluronic acid filler, so it’s an easier option than ear surgery. However, it can be a little pricey and does require touch-ups.

Why do people get it?

Look, we know Kim’s reason is a little much. But if you put the ‘my diamonds are too heavy’ thing aside for a second, she does have a point. After all, our hefty $19.99 Lovisa numbers could stretch out ear piercings too.

Dermatologist Michelle Henry, MD, spoke to Refinery29 about why more people are getting the procedure. “These are really young, fashionable women who are wearing large statement earrings that can be quite heavy. With time, that starts to pull on the piercing site [which then] starts to stretch and stretch and stretch, and become elongated. Eventually, it might even tear through the ear,” she said. But Dr. Henry explains that ageing is also a factor: “As we get older, our collagen starts to deteriorate. When that happens, the ears start to deflate, sag, and become floppy.”

It’s unusual, but for the earlobe-conscious and earring-obsessed, it seems to be popular!

Have you ever had an earlobe piercing stretch? Would you ever try this procedure?

  1. That’s why you don’t wear huge, heavy dangly earrings every day! I understand the point though. A lot of older ladies have very stretched out ear lobes from their younger days. You can also cover them up with chunky studs if you don’t want surgery!

  2. I had a stretched out earlobe from when I was 8 years old and my earring got ripped out but I was too scared to tell my mum lol. So continued wearing heavy earrings which stretched out my ear lobe all throughout school. Finally at 23 I had a surgeon stitch up the stretched out piercing hole, and got it re pierced. My lobe is still a bit stretched out however it doesn’t bother me as my stud earrings usually cover it, plus I like the look of fake stretchers atm, just the small ones. If my lobes were sagging I’d definitely get it done. I’m too afraid to wear very heavy dangly earrings because of this. I’ll stick to studs and cute huggie hoops instead thanks!
