The current restrictions on beauty salons in Australia

The current restrictions on beauty salons in Australia

It’s almost been three months since the Australian government announced only ‘essential’ businesses could continue operating. The restrictions saw us kiss goodbye our beloved nail and spray tan technicians (figuratively, of course), leaving most of us to brush up on our waxing and diy root touch-up skills at home.

But it’s starting to look like our unkempt eyebrows and nails might be getting some professional TLC real soon.

However, until the whole of Australia has been given the green light, it’s easy to get confused about what you can and can’t do, based on government announcements.

So to help you navigate what’s going on in your state beauty-wise, we’ve put together the latest guidelines (from the official govemernment websites) in one helpful state-by-state list.

Scroll down to find your state for the latest update…

All services offered by beauty therapy, cosmetic services, massage and body art businesses (a personal services business) in the Northern Territory will be able to operate without restrictions provided the operator has submitted a COVID-19 safety plan and put measures in place.

However, the Chief Health Officer (the CHO) may place further requirements on the reopening of personal services businesses.

  1. I haven’t been to the hairdresser, but hubby has. I really do need to visit the hairdresser. My hair feels too long and untidy. The salon I usually go to has been closed.

  2. I feel sorry for the small business operators who are suffering financially, it’s bewildering how you can get a haircut but not a manicure, It must be very frustrating for them.

  3. Thank You BH for the Essential Information regarding Hair Salons need to make an appointment with my hairdresser.
Hopefully it won’t be too long before Beauty Salons are Opening Soon!

  4. I had a hair appointment the other week which I made months ago before all this started. Ended up cancelling it and rebooking for another month. My colour will definately need doing by then as it will have been 3 months since I last went to the hairdresser.

  5. My hairdresser who works from home is only seeing one client at a time and is doing a great job at the cleaning measures between clients. I’m looking forward to seeing her again when I can.

  6. I walked past a hairdresser today (a tiny teeny one) where there was no room for such social distancing of the 2m square – that was in NSW today. I happened to be walking past on the outside and looked in the window. You know those tiny little barber/haircutter style shops in the shopping centres? I guess they are risking their own lives first but it’s not good they are then risking the communities lives beyond that. There was a mum and her daughter waiting their turn to have their haircuts on the waiting seats which are definitely within 1.5m of the seats and the moving hairdresser!. I have noticed a lot of other salons are not open yet and I don’t blame them.

  7. Don’t go to hairdressers as I like to do my own hair the way I want (not the trendy and trained way). One across the road from me was open all this time and was happy to see customers daily while passing by.

  8. I’m looking forward to getting my brows threaded & tinted again (and having the blonde mo’ threaded away). That’s all I’m really missing atm. My hairdresser is still open but I’m putting off my visit until next month.

  9. I’m looking forward to the reopening of salons. I have a couple of vouchers for services to use up. I also think it’s about time I went for a brow reshape. I’ve been plucking for years and think they’ve gone a bit unsymmetrical.

  10. It hasn’t really affected me as I don’t go to beauty salons, just the hairdressers for a cut. I’m lucky to be in a state where we’ve only had 1 case in the last 30 days.
