Brushing our hair is second nature but how about brushing our body? Now before you dismiss it as just another element to add to your already lengthy beauty regime, I have this to say to you…’don’t knock it ‘til you try it.’
Happy to hear about, try, and put through its paces anything that can improve the look, feel, and radiance of my skin, I decided to give body brushing (also known as dry skin brushing) a go.
Why?
Well, why not? Like most women, I get dry skin on my legs (mainly on my shins), and also a little rough skin on the backs of my upper arms. I also like the idea of improving blood circulation and, having been suffering from cramps in my legs of late (I’m putting it down to the pregnancy), I decided action was needed.
What are the benefits of body brushing?
Dry skin body brushing before showering or bathing stimulates blood circulation and lymphatic flow, which helps to eliminate toxins from our body, while the gentle brushing action is a great way to exfoliate the skin and lessen the likelihood of ingrown hairs.
Body brushing only needs to take five minutes and many people find it quite therapeutic. The important thing is to use a firm but not heavy-handed brushing action. Begin at your feet and sweep the brush upwards towards the heart. When it comes to your tummy, brush in circular, clockwise motions.
Once you’ve finished showering or bathing don’t rub your body dry, rather lightly pat off excess water with a soft towel and use your favourite moisturiser generously for optimal skin soothing.
