Winter is finally upon us, bringing with it an onslaught of dryness, dehydration, and dullness. And to help defeat these common skin ailments and keep your complexion glowing, it’s important to sort out a stellar winter skin care routine.
The key to a successful nightly skin care routine in winter is hydration, so we’ve pulled together a guide complete with our favourite products to help you establish a ritual that works for you. Scroll down for your fail-proof formula for bouncy, dewy skin all winter long.
Opt for a gentle cleanser

As anyone with dry skin would know, winter comes hand in hand with dehydration, so it’s important to find a cleanser that hydrates rather than strips your skin. There’s nothing worse than that dry, squeaky skin sensation.
Choose an oil-based cleansing balm or micellar water for your first cleanse to remove makeup and any build-up from the day. For your second cleanse, a cream cleanser will work wonders to get rid of any extra impurities and leave your skin feeling soft and nourished. Oh, and you may want to avoid washing your face in the shower — the scalding hot water may feel good at the time but will leave your skin feeling stripped and dehydrated.

Layer up your serums

Cold weather typically brings with it dull, tired-looking skin. So if your complexion is in need of some serious TLC, a concoction of targeted serums will be your saving grace.
Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, ascorbic acid and botanicals to hydrate, plump and supercharge your complexion. And of course, don’t forget the heavy-hitting power of retinol to leave your skin looking gloriously radiant.

Don’t skip the exfoliation

Don’t push all your exfoliants to the back of the beauty cabinet just yet. You’re going to need a solution to whisk away dry skin, and an exfoliating serum, toner or mask will do just that while still providing nourishment.
Opt for a serum or oil-based exfoliant and for those with dry skin, stick to once or twice-weekly use to avoid over-exfoliating.

Night cream is a must

Winter really puts your skin through the wringer, so you’ll need a rich night cream to help lock in moisture and repair your skin while you sleep.
A ceramide-powered cream is a great way to boost your skin’s barrier and lock in hydration. And just like in your go-to serums, humectants such as glycerin, glycolic acid and hyaluronic acid are the key to waking up with a plump, glowing complexion.

Finish with a hydrating oil

Facial oils are perhaps one of the simplest and most effective ways to defeat dry skin. Think of oils as your moisturiser’s trusty sidekick that will save the day (or night) and add an extra shot of hydration.
If you’re prone to breakouts, look for an oil with non-comedogenic ingredients such as sea buckthorn, squalane and camellia oils that will replenish your natural glow without clogging pores.

The Jojoba Company Australian Jojoba ($33.95 at The Jojoba Company)
Add a weekly mask (or two)

Level-up your skin’s hydration with a nourishing face mask. Not only will your skin be left feeling silky soft and replenished, but setting aside some ‘you time’ to simply sit and mask is also a great weekly wellness ritual.
Whether you opt for a sheet mask, gel mask or overnight sleep mask (perfect for the time-poor), your skin will thank you. And don’t forget to add a conditioning lip mask for the perfect pout!

Trilogy Hydrating Jelly Mask ($22.36 at Amazon Australia)
Skin Physics Advance SUPERLIFT® 3D™ Deep Hydration Lifting Mask ($29.99 at Priceline)
SkinB5™ Purifying Mask ($29.95 at Priceline)
Never be without lip balm

Dry, chapped lips are a common occurrence in winter but you’ll be less likely to suffer a sore pout if you keep a trusty lip balm at your bedside. The best lip balms for winter are ones that not only hydrate but contain soothing ingredients to ease any pain when it does strike and an occlusive, protective formula to keep lips shielded while you sleep.

Day One of winter and my skin is already feeling the negative effects. Slathering moisturiser and staying hyrdrated is key!
Definitely! And making sure you avoid dry climes wear possible!
Yes, dry airconditioners and heaters are the worst for stripping the skin of moisture!

Yeh and I’m finding I have to make myself drink more water because I tend to naturally drink less in this colder weather…..off for another bottle of Frantelle water…
Thanks for posting this article. Have only made slight changes to my skincare routine from day to night.
My skin really needs a skincare change up during colder months, it gets so dry and dehydrated. Good suggestions in this article.
I’ve switched to a gentle cleanser, heavier moisturiser and more oil. Definitely need all of it in the winter
I’d suggest a daily mask (you can diy) and use of a humidifier.
Getting over comments awaiting moderation!
Totally!
Ha ha, me too
Some good suggestions and recommendations.
same. No one knows why is this happening. Just plain sentences and generic words. Bizarre.
They are trying to moderate the word that means the opposite of wet! Strange!
Dry?
hahah…tried to type only that word! And yes! So funny haha
I wondered why…I posted a comment and it is awaiting moderation.
So strange when these are words to describe how your skin is, no?
I’m loving Ceta phil optimal hyrdatoin (incorrect spelling on purpose).
So the word hydrate is also not allowed?
Oh awaiting moderation, perhaps it is because it is a sensitive word somehow.
So not happy about winter being here! I’ll be patiently waiting for spring =)
I love the Midnight Recovery.
I am yet to try it but it has me intrigued!
I’ve switched to a much heavier moisturiser, and my skin is responding really well.
Love winter! Sun is not crazy and my skin is so soft and smooth
I hate the summer – & my skin is always at its best in winter, too.
Charlotte’s Magic cream…someday I will be able to try it lol someday =)
I would be happy to try every single one of the recommended products.
yes they all look as they would be lovely to use. I love good moisturizers at any time
So would I.
My hands have been a wreck for a week or so as I’ve been doing some exterior painting. I’m going through all my hand creams at a fast pace. I’ll be adding jojoba oil to my night time routine.
Some beautiful products here I must try! Winter is kicking in and my skin has been feeling a little dry… think I need to change my skincare up a bit!
I use a heavier night cream in winter and use a toner instead of an exfoliator as my skin is dry and sensitive. I love using a face mask too
I love Clinique’s Take the Day Off balm & rosehip oil. The only difference I make in winter is to use hand cream occasionally. I don’t need it any other time of the year.
I don’t have any particular product that I savour just for winter but I really try to keep hydrated. Really like the look of that Clinique cleansing balm.
Swisse mask and Go To repair mask look good!
Waiting for my Order from the Rewards Room, have a really good night mask, gentle cleanser is a must and using a Face Serum.
I love serums.
I do tend to use more oils and heavier moisturiser in winter as the cold wind really affects my skin.
I have the same problem. What oils and heavy moisturisers are your favourites?
A great article and it’s a must for me to give my skin more winter care.
I’m currently using the La Roche-Posay serum and it’s great. I really want to try CeraVe products. It’s on my ‘want to buy’list
I’ve already started on the thicker day and night creams. Lots of good suggestions for keeping the skin hydrated, plump and juicy.
So many steps!! I need to up my routine for winter
Creamy cleanser and oil.
I like to use an extra thick creamy night cream in winter
Same here! Do you have any recommendations for very dry skin?
So much choice but i do need to use more and layer more serums
I love the Cerave cleanser
Great article. will definitely use a gentler cleanser and look into hydrating oil at the end
Loving the serum at night thing
So many lovely products!
I am very lazy with my night routine. But must get better at cleansing and moisturising before bed.
I love layering my serums. Good tips for winter!
Cleansing balms as a first cleanser have become a staple for me! I’ve also been using the Paula’s Choice 2% BHA serum for about a month now and haven’t yet formed an opinion. How have others gone with the product?
hyaluronic acid is a must!
I’ve just started using a face oil again (Mecca Everyday Face Oil FYI) after a year or 2 of forgoing it (my skin was being silly) & I’ve remembered why I liked using them. It definitely gives my skin more of a boost, especially at this time of year.
I haven’t tried any of these products, but I do agree that you need to focus on hydration more in winter.
My skin feels so dry and itchy with all of this harsh, cold wind!
I love face oil during the winter.
I just love the Habitual Beauty Rejuvenating Facial Oil. It’s expensive but it lasts a very long time (I use it every night and am on my 4th month with still more than half the bottle left – you only need a little). My skin drinks it up.
A wonderful read and beautiful products that I would love to add to my beauty routine.
I got the chance to try Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm from Clinique. And i loved this cleansing balm it was so good on the skin and removed make up so well
Need an article just for my lips, this winter is brutal already
oils and sleeping mask are my favorites
Good advice.
The Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery is good, but I find the Clinique Cleansing Balm a bit greasy 🙁
I’ve liked cerave hydrating cream – to – foam cleanser
