6 signs you’re using the wrong face cleanser

Piling on serums, moisturisers and masks, and still not getting the glowing skin you crave? It could be that you’re using the wrong face cleanser.

As dermatologist Dr Adam Sheridan explains, facial cleansing with a formula that isn’t suited to your skin type can wreak absolute havoc on your complexion, not to mention make the rest of your skin care routine less effective.

So, how can you tell if your face cleanser’s failing you? From acne to dryness and everything in between, our expert reveals the telltale signs your cleanser isn’t cutting it (plus, how to find the best facial cleanser for you)…

Dryness/tight feeling skin

We’ve all experienced that tight, dry feeling after using an inappropriate cleanser. As Dr Sheridan explains, this happens because the cleanser has “disrupted the skin barrier,” stripping the skin’s natural oils and compromising its natural pH level. The worst part? Not only is your skin now drier than it was before, it also won’t absorb your moisturiser as readily – so the dry condition of the skin could easily become chronic.

As well as helping to prevent that horrible tight feeling, Dr Sheridan says, “A properly selected face cleanser will also help prepare the skin for receipt of moisturisers,” leading to a #nextlevel soft complexion. bh recommends NIVEA Creme Care Cleansing Cream Wash, which is formulated to leave your skin feeling soft and cared for (and perfectly prepped for your moisturiser!).

Roughness

Over time, the hydration deficit caused by a crummy cleanser is also likely to lead to a rougher skin texture. But that’s not all. Dr Sheridan says “Pre-existing tendencies such as dermatitis and psoriasis may also be exacerbated,” leading to an uneven look and feel, and rough, dry patches. In other words, it’s “bye-bye, soft skin” and hello to sandpapery skin!

Redness and sensitivity

For skin types that are already prone to redness and sensitivity, an incorrect face cleanser is a big no-no. “A poor cleanser will disrupt the skin’s finely tuned micro-environment; resulting in irritated, inflamed skin,” says Dr Sheridan. The expert recommends “creamier products” for these skin types in the harsher winter months. We like NIVEA Creme Care Cleansing Lotion, which is formulated to gently remove makeup and impurities, while caring for your complexion.

Breakouts

As Dr Sheridan explains, “The right cleanser resets and rebalances the skin as it cleans, replenishing lost hydrating elements, and preserving the skin’s natural pH level and barrier function.” A cleanser that contains “unnecessary foaming agents, surfactants or preservatives,” on the other hand, can be overly aggressive, stripping the skin’s natural barrier and causing it to go into overdrive with excess oil production. The end result? Anything from a blind pimple to a full-blown breakout.

Dullness

Using the wrong cleanser can lead to a dull, uneven complexion. As Dr Sheridan puts it, “The overall appearance is that of ill health” – not exactly what you want from your skin care regimen! For those with dull skin, hydrating cleansing wipes can help freshen up your complexion on the go. “Wipes are helpful for spot cleansing on the move,” agrees Dr Sheridan. Try NIVEA Creme Care Facial Cleansing Wipes, which are formulated to leave your skin not only feeling clean, but looking refreshed and hydrated as well.

Premature signs of ageing

A cleanser that causes dryness can lead to “accelerated weathering and premature ageing” over time, says Dr Sheridan. As the expert explains, this is because the skin’s protective barrier has been compromised, leaving the skin vulnerable to harmful environmental pollutants and microbes. The end result? Fine lines and wrinkles, a dull skin tone, or a crepey skin texture – all way ahead of schedule.

How to select the right cleanser for you

Your age, skin type and any pre-existing skin conditions are all important considerations when it comes to selecting the best facial cleanser for you. That being said, there are a few fundamental features you should look for. Dr Sheridan says a good face cleanser should always be formulated to:

  • Gently clean the skin and rid it of unwanted debris and pollutants
  • Maintain your skin’s hydration level and replenish lost moisture with non-comedogenic moisturising elements, such as emollients and humectants
  • Preserve the skin’s natural acid pH level and barrier function
  • Prepare the skin to absorb moisturiser

Formulated to cleanse your skin thoroughly and leave it feeling soft and cared for, NIVEA Creme Care Cleansing Cream Wash ticks all of the boxes, making it a great fit for most.

But the best facial cleanser for you should also suit your lifestyle and personal preferences. The NIVEA Creme Care Facial Cleansing Range has a facial cleanser for everyone: Three different product types, each featuring the same skin-friendly formula and signature NIVEA Creme scent.

So, whether you favour a classic approach to skin care with NIVEA Creme Care Cleansing Cream Wash, an extra gentle application method with NIVEA Creme Care Cleansing Lotion, or are always on the go with NIVEA Creme Care Facial Cleansing Wipes, your preferred cleanser will meet all of your skin care needs.
