The supermodel era – where are they now?

They were the big six – the first models to reach celebrity status. Every girl wanted to be them and every fashion and beauty company wanted to sign them. Now, almost twenty years after their height of popularity, we wonder where these stunning beauties are now and how they are choosing to fight the effects of ageing.

Cindy Crawford

Then: In the 90s Cindy was the cover girl queen. There was hardly a magazine left that she hadn’t been on the cover of and everyone quickly learnt who the girl with the trademark mole was.

Now: Cindy has a skin care line called ‘Meaningful Beauty’ and a home furniture business called ‘Cindy Crawford Home’, both of which are very successful. She is married with two children.

Ageing: Cindy has admitted to having botox and vitamin injections but ‘doesn’t think’ she’s ever had collagen. She denies having any ‘proper’ plastic surgery because she thinks it makes women look too ‘unreal’. She has facials and microdermabrasion at least once a month and dry brushes her skin every day.

Christy Turlington

Then: Christy quickly rose to supermodel fame after she featured in Duran Duran’s music clip ‘Notorious’ in 1986. From then she became the face of Calvin Klein and continued to represent them until 2007.

Now: Christy is a co-founder of ‘Every Mother Counts’, a non-profit organisation that aims to educate people on maternal mortality. She has her own skin care line ‘Sundari’ and has just returned to Calvin Klein as the face and body of their new underwear line. She is married with two kids.

Ageing: Denies having any surgery or botox, claiming that she’s not afraid of ageing. She loves Yoga and believes that beauty starts from the inside. She says, ‘Yoga is the absolute best set of tools I can recommend to help one feel and look one’s absolute best at any age.’

Claudia Schiffer

Then: This tall, blonde and blue-eyed beauty was in high demand for magazine covers and was the first model to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone. She was also the face of Chanel.

Now: Claudia launched her own cashmere line in March 2011. She was a judge on Fashion Fringe and last year posed for Guess in celebration of their 30th anniversary. She is married with 3 children.

Ageing: Denies having botox after stating in 2009 that ‘it’s poison in my skin and no-one knows the long term effects’. As for plastic surgery she claims she is too ‘squeamish’ to ever do something like that. She strictly eats only three meals a day, starting with unlimited fresh fruit for breakfast and after releasing numerous get-fit DVD’s, it’s clear that she enjoys exercise.

Linda Evangelista

Then: Linda was featured on the cover of over 600 magazines and still holds the record for the most covers of Vogue Italia. She was the long time muse of photographer Steven Meisel and is also known for coining the phrase ‘We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day’.

Now: Just last year Linda featured on the cover of Vogue Italia. She has a six year old son Augustin, whose father is French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault.

Ageing: Linda is pro-cosmetic procedures stating, ‘I use Botox and I’m not afraid to say it’. She also admits to doing thermage, a treatment used to stimulate collagen. She wears sunscreen everyday and does yoga and pilates to keep in shape.

Naomi Campbell

Then: Naomi appeared on her first magazine cover at the age of 15. She, Christy and Linda became known as the ‘trinity’ and were the most in-demand models of their generation. She was also the first black model to appear on the cover of French Vogue.

Now: Naomi is one of the three judges on reality TV show ‘The Face’. She has never been married and just recently split from Russian businessman Vladislav Doronin.

Ageing: Naomi has never confessed to using botox, but has said in an interview that she is ‘not opposed to injectables’. She has also admitted to an extreme detox diet in which she drinks a concoction of Maple syrup, cayenne pepper, lemon juice and water. She will drink this and eat nothing else for eighteen days straight, at least three times a year.

Kate Moss

Then: Kate was often referred to as the ‘anti-supermodel’ because of her size zero figure, which differed from the other more curvaceous supermodels. She has been featured on the cover of British Vogue thirty times and worked on campaigns for Calvin Klein, Rimmel London and Burberry.

Now: Kate is still the face of many beauty and fashion brands. She was just recently announced as the new face and body of St. Tropez and her Rimmel London campaigns are as strong as ever. Kate has a 10-year-old daughter and was married to guitarist Jamie Hince in 2011.

Ageing: Kate, being the youngest of the six supermodels has yet to indulge in any botox or plastic surgery. She does Pilates to keep her body in shape and submerges her face in ice water and cucumber to wake up her skin and tighten her pores.
