What did Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker all have in common during the ‘90s? Thriving acting careers aside, like many Hollywood starlets they were rocking the deep side-part paired with wild, spiral curls, a style that was later replaced by sleek, straight hair and lightly tousled beach waves. Well, at least until Drew Barrymore attended NYFW over the weekend and put this look right back on our radar.
Looking as if she’d stepped straight off the set of My Best Friend’s Wedding (albeit with her own 2022 twist), Drew rocked flipped hair and corkscrew curls, a look we first fell in love with when Julia Roberts walked the 1990 Golden Globes red carpet.
However, Drew, a ‘90s icon in her own right, replaced Julia’s oversized business suit and tie with a red silk combo and switched out the brown lippy for a rosier hue, which we can only assume is the Flower Beauty Perfect Pout in the shade Orchid ($9.99 at Chemist Warehouse).
Just as we thought we were done with our ‘90s nostalgia obsession, it takes one picture of Drew Barrymore to bring us right back. So naturally, the next question is, how do we recreate this look ourselves?
Here are our incredibly easy tips for achieving ’90s curls:
- Prep hair with a texturising spray like the Fudge Membrane Gas ($10.99, Priceline) for extra grip
- Next, section the hair into small pieces and twist each piece around a 1-inch curling iron; starting at the root and continuing to the end of the strand
- Fluff hair at the roots and flip over, pushing to one side to achieve the deep side part
- Finish with a light hair
What do you think about this look? Have you ever worn your hair like this?
My girl has curly hair. It’s beautiful.
I could only wear my hair like that when I had it permed. That was in the 90’s.
So jealous of people who can rock curly hair.
Love it on her but my hair is frizzy so I don’t wear it down often.
It’s a great look, it suits her.
Is it just my eyes or has Drew had her bottom lip overdrawn in the photo with the yellow clothing and they’ve not filled in the gap with lipstick?
Maybe it’s just a reflection
No, I think you were right the first time, Bianca – badly overdrawn & not filled in.
Oh, take me back to the 80’s and 90’s! I love BIG hair, big shoulder pads, and big jewelry!
No my hair is short and very fine, not a style I could aspire to unless I rocked a wig
Such a beautiful outfit!
Simple easy look. Very pretty
A definite throw back!
It’s been a good few years since I’ve worn my hair like this.
Drew looks like she’s wearing her pyjamas!
Absolutely adore that red silk suit… She looks gorgeous
Drew looks great with curls.
