I’ve always considered myself lucky in the skin department. But now that I’m getting older, there are definitely some skin care tips I wish I’d known before 30 (or rather, paid attention to).
Because even though I’ve worked in beauty for the past nine years (and have read and written loads about skin care), it doesn’t mean I’ve done everything right.
So from the tips I ignored when I really shouldn’t have, to the things I thought were great but were actually far from it, these are the pieces of skin care wisdom I wish I’d known sooner.
#1 The best cleanse is a gentle cleanse
In my twenties I thought a good cleanser was one that could take off my waterproof mascara and heavy foundation in a single swipe. Efficient. Excellent. But a cleanser that could strip paint isn’t exactly great for maintaining a healthy skin moisture barrier. And I have a combination skin type that will both overproduce oil and exacerbate dryness if it gets too out of whack.
Don’t get me wrong, makeup removal is still important (nobody wants residue). But these days I opt for a cleansing balm or micellar water that does so gently (and without dragging) before a second cleanse that leaves my skin clean but hydrated.
#2 Hyaluronic acid works better when your skin is damp
Oh the serums I wasted over the years not knowing this! Hyaluronic acid’s main job is to attract and bind water to the skin. So if your skin is dry when you apply it, it has nothing to attract and won’t work effectively. Also file under: reasons face mists are actually great.
#3 And the same goes for body moisturiser
Think you’re too lazy (to apply) or impatient (waiting for it to dry) for body moisturiser? Apply it straight after the shower while your limbs are still damp. It spreads way easier, your skin will soak it up and you can always dab over it with a towel before getting dressed (but you probably won’t need to).
#4 Put SPF everywhere
I don’t have many regrets in life but not putting sunscreen on my chest as often as my face is one of them. My chest is a lot more lined and scattered with hyperpigmentation as a result, and I have to work much harder to try and minimise the damage that’s been done.
I knew that getting sunburnt was bad. In fact, it only takes five sunburns before the age of 20 to increase your risk of a melanoma by 80 per cent*. But while I would put sunscreen on my body whenever I was at the beach or outside in summer, I didn’t do it daily for every exposed surface.
It’s been found that Australian women visibly age up to 20 years fa ster than those in the US**. And now that I’m in my thirties, the difference between my face and chest is showing me exactly why wearing sunscreen is the single best thing you can do to care for your skin and protect it from sun damage.
So please learn from my mistake and don’t poo-poo the idea of prevention. Find an SPF that you love enough to use every day and apply it to every part of your body that’s uncovered (and therefore unprotected).
La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios sunscreens provide broad spectrum SPF50+ protection and are dermatologically tested for sensitive skin. For the face, Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF50+ ($35.95 at La Roche-Posay) is the lightest sunscreen formula, while Anthelios Wet Skin SPF50+ ($42.95 at La Roche Posay) is a body sunscreen that’s suitable for the whole family and (you guessed it) can be applied to wet skin.

#5 Good skin care = good makeup
I shudder to think of the times when past me would attempt to blend foundation on a dry, unprepped face. Makeup will always look a million times better if you create a smooth and plump canvas with the proper skin care first. I’m talking minutes before, not the night before.
#6 Create a skin care schedule
We’re often told we need a morning and a nightly routine. And while this isn’t wrong, there are some steps you only need to do every 2-3 nights. And some that are only require a weekly call up. Figuring out a rhythm and schedule that worked for my skin was a game-changer. Now Monday night is exfoliating night, Tuesday night is actives night, Wednesday night is hydration night and so on.
#7 It’s always worth paying for a good facial
A facial is certainly a luxury and there’s nothing worse than being disappointed when it comes to ‘treating’ yourself. I’ve had my fair share of bad and sub par facials over the years, and found that it’s always been worth paying that little bit more for a better experience (as well as reading other people’s reviews if going somewhere new). So add on the Omnilux, the skin needling, and the microdermabrasion, because if you’re going to get a facial you might as well get one that will give you a longer-lasting glow.

ALWAYS READ THE LABEL AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE.
Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection so wear protective clothing and seek shade. Avoid prolonged sun exposure.
Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming, towelling and perspiring in accordance with directions.

What are the skin tips you wish you knew earlier?
Those are great tips, thank you for sharing.
Only that I was not frying my face on the sun so much. Other than that, all great. And luckily was able to reverse damage.
Oh wow, how did you reverse damage?
Wish I wore sunscreen when I was younger.
When I was young sunscreen was not thought of and nobody used it.
Yeah when I was young sunscreen didn’t exist – instead there was ‘tanning lotion’ which was oily and had no spf whatsoever! It was the 70’s!
Me too, I used to sunbake so much when I was younger. Sunscreen wasn’t really around then and the highest SPF was about an 8. Luckily I did always put a towel over my face when I used to sunbake so I don’t have too much sun damage on my face.
I don’t reapply during the day and I am deficient in vitamin d, my Gp constantly tells me to wear short sleeves, shorts and go into the sun during the day.
me too -I often got sunburnt
Yes, my chest looks so much older than my face 🙁
I think I’m going to get that too.
I feel like drink plenty of water, get lots of rest and eat well while you are young can also have a huge impact on the health of your skin
Drinking more water 💦
I haven’t been using enough sunscreen and it shows. 🙁
Tried and true tips, I didn’t wear sunscreen when young but its a everyday part of life for me now.
Applying lotion and serums to damp skin has been amazing! Also the part about SPF is so true! I make sure to always put it on every single part of my body before I leave the house
Regret not protecting my décolletage better, skin in that area not looking so good.
I’m in the same boat – I now take my face care all down towards the decolletage but I wish I’d done that decades ago
I wish I had been encouraged to wear SPF more often pre-30’s.
SPF everywhere?? No thanks. Be careful of the toxic ingredients. Most important advice I would give is never, ever smoke and that includes vapouring. If you need convincing take a look at the skin of long term smokers.
Great tips! I’m glad Mum forced me to wear sunscreen when I was younger
We’ll done Mum, I am the same with ,y kids.
Aww my mum was the complete opposite! She never used sunscreen on me as a child and we literally fried to a crisp, so red and painful. Then we would sit there peeling the dead skin off! Let’s just say she was very naive.
You’re lucky, Mum used to nag me about spending so much time in the sun and I didn’t take enough notice back then.
Oh my gosh, reading all of these comments, sounds like I really need to too.
I knew to take my makeup before bed. That was underage clubbing too.
Like many people at my age (I’m in my late fifties), I regret frying my skin in the sun – especially as I have fair skin.
I used to use baby oil on my skin and lemon juice in my hair to lighten it and then sit in the sun.
What did that too to your skin? Moisturised it?
Yes I remember doing this too !!
Thank You Samantha yes all of those things you wished you knew when you were Younger. Sunscreen 50 plus is more important on my Face and Body before I go out of the Door.
Great advice and tips
Sunscreen! My mum was always on our case for wearing sunscreen and a hat
Good on you Mum
Haha : ) so true!
Great tips thanks for the info
A skin schedule is a good idea
Moisturising the body after a show or bath is good
I’m with most other members and wished I would’ve worn SPF when I was a teen and in my early 20s. Not just on my face but everywhere too! I sometimes think about what if I had worn sunscreen religiously since a child, how much younger I’d look lol.
I would add that finding a good moisturiser and using it every day is a vital, basic step.
Hear, hear
Wearing sunscreen, I wish that I had done more of very early on but have gained so much wisdom and learnt a lot over the years. Thanks for sharing bh!, a great read.
I wish I did all of the above years ago. I never Knew Hyaluronic acid works better when your skin is damp but I do know that your lips dry out less if they are damp when applying lipstick.
I wish i had good skin care routine and wore sunscreen. But i am now teaching my kids to do them more often.
Yes me too . I used to hat sun hats and loved sun bathing -with no SPF !!!
It’s important not to skip the decolletage.
#2 Hyaluronic acid works better when your skin is damp – no, this isn’t true! This is a myth. HA works just the same whether or not it’s applied to damp skin, it’s just for some people, it feels nicer to use HA on damp skin.
@Haylee_ I came across an article yesterday on Mamamia titled ‘A cosmetic chemist just debunked 6 common skincare myths’. The first point to be debunked was this exact one.
I’m glad the message is slowly getting out there!
Oh! Interesting!
Good job! I think many girls will like it!

I’m much more sun conscious now than when I was a teenager.
SPF everywhere and wearing hats more than ever
I love my sun visors
I’m approaching 30 in the next few months… I follow most of these tips. Would be keen to get more facials as a birthday treat.
SPF was not used and sometimes people wore zinc on their faces which was a no no for me -Wish i had known
Such an important message about using sunscreen and avoiding sunburn.
I have to agree with the majority of members who mentioned sunscreen/SPF! With the various sunscreens now available, including tinted sunscreens, here’s hoping younger generations will begin or continue to see the importance of wearing sunscreen, something some of us weren’t aware of when we were younger.
Tinted sunscreen is great because it is two applications in one.
Good to know some of these. I agree with some of it and some I didn’t even think about.
Ok so lots of comments about wearing sunscreen.
I don’t wear it as much because GP tells me to get more sun because I am vitamin D deficient.
Does anyone have this issue?
I wish I had followed these rules in my 20s
Drink water and use a high SPF whatever colour your skin is.
Body moisturiser works better when your skin is damp. wow never knew this. Must give it a try
I think it is very important to just be gentle and kind to your skin.
Some great tips
Such good tips here. 🙂
Some really good tips i can keep in mind. But I definitely need to up my sunscreen game
