Scarlett Johansson Discussed The Impact Adult Acne Had On Her Confidence

In the last week alone, we’ve reported two little-known facts about Scarlett Johansson. The first? She’s a natural brunette, not a blonde. And second? There was a time when her skin wasn’t as perfect as we know it now. During a recent interview, Scarlett opened up about her struggle with adult acne, just as her career as an actress was beginning to ramp up. This was one of the motivations behind the launch of her own skin care line, The Outset.

“I still look back at photos of me on the red carpet in my twenties, and I’m like, ‘I remember that pimple,'” she told People.

In an all too relatable attempt to clear her complexion, Scarlett shared that she tried “every kind of acne peel, mask and resurfacing polish.” All of which were far too harsh and ended up irritating her sensitive skin. Learning from her own mistakes, Scarlett ensured her own skin care line kept things gentle and simple, keeping her products free from overly harsh ingredients that strip the skin of its essential oils.

The actress reminisced on feeling insecure about her skin as she was on set shooting a film. “It was terrible,” she said. “I would cover my acne before I even got in the makeup chair just so I didn’t feel so exposed.”

And a sentiment shared by anyone who has experienced any sort of skin irritation, whether it be acne, rosacea or even just a one off hormonal breakout, “it really does affect how you feel about yourself. You just want to scrub it away.” Amen.

Have you ever experienced adult acne? How did it make you feel?

  1. I had terrible adult acne in my twenties – I felt really sad that I had every thing else going for me but my skin was letting me down. I’d tried everything but it didn’t help so I hot footted it down to the skin care specialist and that was the beginning of the end for my acne!

  2. I agree. For a period of time, I had cystic acne on the bottom half of my face to the base of my neck. I didn’t leave the house much, and when I did, some people would comment. It does affect your confidence 🙁

  3. Hormonal acne can be extremely difficult to treat. My daughter has been dealing with her acne for years. She has a good attitude and doesn’t let it get her down.

  4. Interestingly I never cared less about it. Had heaps when a teen, cared zero. Now get from time to time when trying new skincare, still care zero and as always, not covering it up either.

  5. Might have to check this out. ‘One-off hormonal breakout’ makes hormonal acne sound insignificant but for me it’s big angry spots that hurt like hell and are in weird spots like side of my neck, really embarrassing to have to explain,

  6. I was suffering from acne since months and i was so annoyed. I have tried many products but they did’nt work at last i saw DermalMD anti acne serum and thought of giving it a try and i am so glad that i tried it . My acnes are now diminishing. I’m so happy about it . Totally worth a try.✅

  7. You certainly don’t think of beautiful women having these kinds of problems and insecurities. Acne is awful, especially as it so often happens when people are young and vulnerable.
