Pre-party hair repair

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s safe to say that party season is about to kick-off (or for some, it already has). And as summer continues, it’s only going to intensify with New Year’s festivities, Australia Day, BBQ’s, beach parties, and public holidays galore.

While we definitely don’t want to be the buzz-kill that puts a dampener on your party season vibe, we do need to point out that with all this partying and summer time fun, there’s a big chance your hair will feel the effects.

So we got the low-down from John Frieda International Creative Consultant, Harry Josh, on how you can make sure that your hair stays in tip-tip condition, even when you factor in pre-party styling and colouring, summertime sun exposure, and the effects of sea water and chlorine.

Styling
Too much styling can have a two-pronged effect on your hair – heat damage and product build-up. “Many women are guilty of becoming trapped in the vicious cycle of too much heat styling!” says Harry. “Hair becomes dried out, parched, brittle, frazzled, and the ends are frayed – all tell-tale signs of too much heat styling, which causes them to heat style more, to hide the damage.”  Sound a bit like you? According to Harry your best course of action is to first and foremost use products that will help repair the damage caused by heat styling – like those from the John Frieda®’s Full Repair range, which have been specifically designed to reverse damage from heat styling and colouring with every use.
As for product build-up, which can leave your hair looking limp, heavier, and darker than usual and happens when you’re using a lot of hairspray, mousse, smoothing serums, or texturisers, Harry recommends using a clarifying shampoo to remove excess product.
Harry’s hair repair product picks for heat damage: John Frieda® Full Repair Shampoo and Conditioner, John Frieda® Perfect Ends Sheer Mist, and John Frieda® Deep Infusion Oil.

Colouring
It’s pretty common to want to want to change your hair colour with the change of season. Which is great, but it’s important to know how colouring and highlighting your hair can damage it and what you can do to keep it as healthy as possible. When colouring your hair, the hair cuticles are lifted, giving the dye the chance to change the colour of your hair – and if you’re lightening your hair (whether it’s just a few highlights or balayage), you’re actually destroying the hair colour particles and bleaching your natural hair colour away. Both of these could easily leave your hair quite damaged, which is why Harry recommends conditioning your hair with the right products. “It’s important to use a rich after-colour conditioner to re-seal the cuticle to lock-in the colour for a smooth, healthy-looking, and shiny result,” he advises. And when it comes to lightened hair, he definitely stresses the importance of using “an intense conditioning treatment at least once a week to replenish lost moisture from the colouring process.”
Harry’s hair repair product picks for coloured hair: John Frieda® Frizz-Ease® Miraculous Recovery Intense Masque, and John Frieda® Sheer Blonde® Blonde Hydration™ Leave-In Conditioner.

Exposure to the sun
Thought the sun’s UV rays were only harmful to your skin? Not so – the harsh rays can be pretty damaging to your hair too, being a major contributor to dry, brittle hair during summer. So, just as you care for your skin in summer, be sure to care for your hair, too. “The best thing for your hair is to keep it covered from the sun!”, says Harry. “If you do want to keep it uncovered, I’d recommend using a protective treatment with an added UV filter.”

Sea and chlorine
Both sea water and chlorine can cause havoc on your hair by drying it out. So what’s the solution? Harry recommends ideally wearing a swimming cap to keep out the water, salt, and chlorine, but if that ‘fashion statement’ is not quite to your liking, he also suggests using a gentle shampoo and leave-in conditioner to replenish lost moisture.
Oh, and if your hair is wet, Harry’s got the perfect way to keep it from becoming dry and brittle, and will look cute at the same time:
“Twist your hair into three tight buns: one above the left ear, one above the right ear, and one central back of the head, and secure with pins. As well as a funky way to make your hair look good and keep flyaways under control during the day, when you release the buns later, you’ll be left with gorgeously soft, natural, beachy waves.”
Harry’s hair repair product picks for hair exposed to the sea and chlorine: John® Frieda Frizz-Ease® Daily Nourishment Leave-In Conditioning Spray.

Did you know that all these factors could be damaging your hair? Are you prone to over-styling during the party season? Do you make sure to care for your hair that little bit extra during summer?
