Acne is a skin condition that many of us struggle with at one point or another in our lives. While many get hit with acne during their teenage years, thanks to your hormones, it can come back to haunt you when you have your period, during your pregnancy, or sometimes without any explanation at all (I’m sure we’d all agree that’s the most fun one, right?!). Whatever the cause, acne is a pain and can cause some serious damage.

There are some stellar skincare products you can use to treat acne at home (look out for products containing salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and tea tree oil in particular), but if you want to take your treatment up a notch, try microdermabrasion. We spoke with Dr Sean Arendse, Founder and Medical Director of Flawless Rejuvenation Skin Clinics, about what a microdermabrasion treatment is and why it’s a good choice for acne-sufferers…
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a type of mechanical exfoliation, done with either crystals or diamonds, that decongests and rejuvenates skin, Dr Arendse explains. “The process is safe for most skin types and removes the superficial layer of dead skin cells to leave your skin cleaner, smoother and healthier,” he says. “It’s fast and gentle with little to no downtime.”
What does microdermabrasion treatment involve?
A microdermabrasion treatment starts with a cleanse and chat about the client’s skin health. “We then perform the microdermabrasion treatment which will feel like a suction on the skin. Fine crystals are sent from the microdermabrasion machine onto the skin to cause the manual exfoliation,” explains Dr Arendse. “We cover the skin thoroughly for a deep clean and exfoliation. We will adjust the treatment parameters accordingly for a sensitive skin type. This treatment is extremely well tolerated and actually quite relaxing. After we have completed the procedure we apply hand selected skin care to finish off the treatment.“
And in terms of the immediate results? Dr Arendse says, “you may get a rosy cheek however this will settle fairly quickly and does not affect your daily routine. It’s a wonderful treatment pre-event.”
Why is microdermabrasion helpful for acne?
Dr Arendse recommends microdermabrasion for mild acne or congested skin. It’s a “non-invasive and comfortable option to decongest pores and lift off any dead skin cells that trap bacteria and oil in the skin,” he explains. “Over time this will improve this skin’s complexion and feel.” And if performed regularly, he says it can help minimise dead skin build-up and maintain a clear complexion.
If you have highly active acne, microdermabrasion treatment isn’t recommended, as “it can cause the pustules to rupture,” says Dr Arendse.
Added microdermabrasion benefits
Not only is microdermabrasion handy for acne-prone skin, it’s also a big help for dehydrated and dull complexions. “ By removing dead skin build up we improve overall skin health and appearance,” says Dr Arendse. “Our clients love the glow and soft feel after a microdermabrasion.”
