We spend the majority of our younger years cursing our hormone-induced oily skin.
We wait for the day when the excess sebum production, responsible for our greasy, acne-prone and congested complexion, leaves us for good.

Fast forward to menopause though, where our hormones are now yoyo-ing differently to our youth, and our skin is left dry, papery, dehydrated. And yep, we’re all begging for a little bit of that oil back.
This sudden loss of hydration is a result of the body’s inability to retain water, often the first symptom of menopause. As our estrogen levels rapidly decline, so too do our collagen stores and sebum production, which results in visible fine lines and deeper set wrinkles.
And while drinking our daily requirement of water is crucial to the skin’s hydration, there is one superhero humectant who earned skin-changing status when it was discovered to be able to hold 1,000 times its weight in water. Hello, hyaluronic acid AKA the hydration magnet.
As the story seems to go, our once naturally produced stores of hyaluronic acid are rapidly declining as we age. So the importance of incorporating a topical serum into your daily routine (pre-moisturising) is a non-negotiable for tackling dry, menopausal skin.
Here are some of our favourite HA serums:
1. Paula’s Choice Hyaluronic Acid Booster
2. Alpha-H Hyaluronic 8
3. CEMOY Hyaluronic Acid Repair Ampoule
4. CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Have you tried a HA serum? If so, which is your favourite?
Am just starting to experiment with the H acid. Like it because it doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin like some other acids.
Do not use separate HA serum. Find it in my skincare added so it is great. Do love to see that ingredient in my routine.
I have never used a pure HA serum but I have used moisturisers with HA in it
My am serum contains HA and Vitamin C.
Gawd, another thing I need to add to my routine.
Thanks BH for the information will keep them in mind when looking for skincare products.
Good to know
Interesting article.
Im using the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleanser, serum and moisturising gel at the moment and its awesome with my sensitive skin.
This article is perfect timing for me.
Im noticing my skin can look quite dehydrated quickly now thanks to ageing. I was on some medications that gave me menopause symptoms and I saw it in my skin. I do like hyaluronic acid in my skincare but I like a product that does everything. I try to keep my routine simple. If I have more than 4 steps I start to slack off with my routine. Too much caffeine is terrible for menopause symptoms. Drink water, green tea, herbal tea, reduce sugar, drink broths, eat fruits and veg. I take a collagen supplement and it helps. Some work and some don’t. I’m currently using one from Harmony. I chuck it in my tea or smoothie.
My skin is all over the shop, oily, then dull, then pimples so to be honest I can’t keep up! I change my skincare to suit. I Love Alpha-H so I would love to try Hyaluronic 8.
Great to know. I’m nearing that time!
I went through menopause 20 years ago and I don’t even think I’d heard of HA.
I use the CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum under my moisturiser and the Neutrogena HA gel cream at night. I like both products
I have been lucky enough not to suffer from any or all of the problems associated with menopause. Feel sorry for others.
I like CeraVe but do not rate the HA serum.
I’ve gone through menopause & it’s been wonderful! No symptoms & no dryness for me though, I’m still getting zits occasionally.
Interesting…
Hi, is that a powder one that you just add to a smoothie?
Excellet products to use
Not using any HA serum – something else I need to add to my skincare!
Thank you for this useful info.A must for any women great reading too.
Interesting article, thank you.
Hmmm. I didn’t know that. I’m going to upgrade my products.
You sound like you have it sorted beauty O!
I bought the alpha H one in the last rewards room and so glad I did!
Yes a powder but it’s an acquired taste. I find adding to smoothie most palatable but I don’t mind it in other way s. If you add to green tea it tastes like broth
Oh yes sometimes hehe 🙂
thankyou for letting me know, yes a smoothie is a good way to disguise quite a few little extra thinsg that may not taste all that good
Does ha do anything long term though
Nope.
Interesting to see!
Thank you – I’ve just reached the point where I need this information.
I’m at this age so appreciate the info
I havent hit menopause yet, but I think we could all do with a little HA. XX
I’m using the Cerave HA serum, however if I can find a quality moisturiser with HA I won’t need a separate serum.
Been finding CEMOY Hyaluronic Acid Repair Ampoule but I think I have to order it instead.
Menopause is not too far off for me. Does it help to start using these products in advance of hitting menopause? That’s what I would love to know.
So much spam. So annoying
Looks like I need to invest in more skin care , HA serum. Shopping spree.
I soon will be going through the menopause so great info thank you BH.
I might need this soon.
Anyone know when rewards room for 2021 opens? Cant see anything on here. This is not a user friendly site to use anyway!
I use Essano Hyaluronic serum it initially smells like fish but smell soon dissipates good product though and affordable!
I have tried Thin Lizzy version didn’t suit me had alergic reaction to it.
I have been using HA since I was 24 or so. It’s basically a water retention ingredient and I think everyone needs it, at any stage of life. Actually our body makes it naturally.
Go away spammers! Must be just about time for our rewards room! Looking forward to that. I’d like to redeem my points on something like this.
Gawd! The spammers are ridiculous lately aren’t they!? I keep reporting them (as do most regulars) and they keep appearing. Feel sorry for the BH team being constantly bombarded with this BS.
I have tried to use hyaluronic acid in different products but it does nothing for my older and dry skin.
