It’s certainly not unusual to find us rummaging through the pantry with raccoon-style tenacity, in search of some type of sweet/salty/just plain tasty snack.
What we’re not usually digging for in the food cupboard, however, is skin care.
But what if we told you that not only could you find a decent skin saviour in there, but the very one Julia Roberts’ skin actually relies on to maintain its ‘gloriously glossy status’…
Julia Roberts’ skin care routine
Spoiler alert: it’s olive oil. Yes indeed,Vogue Italia has reported that Julia mixes up an emulsified mixture of extra virgin olive oil and warm water, before applying it as a mask and leaving it to work its magic for around half an hour. Rumour is that she also likes to lather her hair and nails in a little olive oil for an added hit of hydration.
We love a hack that saves us some pretty pennies! And considering you can nab a giant bottle of olive oil for $7 at Woolworths (and water literally runs out of the tap), this is definitely one of those. We bet you wouldn’t have guessed you could shop Julia Roberts‘ skin care routine at Woolies!
Olive oil skin benefits
Here’s the great news: unlike a lot of ‘hacks’ the Internet has discovered, this one is genuinely trustworthy. Olive oil (which is rich in both antioxidants and healthy monounsaturated fats), is great for reducing water loss, helping to keep skin plumper, softer and smoother for longer. Case in point: Julia’s luminous mug!
And by mixing it with water, you’ll be able to reduce the grease factor that can come with highly nourishing oils, too.
On top of her regular olive oil applications, Julia keeps her daily beauty routine pretty streamlined. “On a regular day, I’ll just brush my teeth, wash my face, and apply sunblock,” she once shared in a chat with Viva.
Solid cleansing upkeep, consistent SPF use, and full faith in a bargain beauty buy? Now that’s a celeb regimen we can get behind.

Do you have a kitchen staple you also use in your beauty routine?
Not for me! Sorry, Jennifer.
Julia lol
No idea where I got Jennifer from – shame there isn’t an edit function here – Sorry, Julia!!
I ingest flaxseed oil everyday – I like the golden organic one – just a tablespoon as it’s anti-inflammatory
Nope! I just stick with the moisturisers I can buy from skincare brands
Can’t say I am crazy about using olive oil myself.
olive oil works for my skin well too. Unlike most other oils. I guess as I come from where there is lots of olives? haha
How or when do you use it in your routine?
Sounds like worth a try and a usual staple in my kitchen.
I use coconut oil on my hair, It might not be a kitchen staple for everyone.
I use a lot of olive oil in cooking and salads but not on my skin. It’s too oily for me.
I find the olive oil too rich.
Ooh interesting! I might give it a go.
Could be a little greasy for me, and then hard to wash off
Prefer olive oil on my salads. I use coconut oil, macadamia or camelia oils.
I love camellia oil! I tried it a long time ago and it made my skin feel lovely.
I love Julia Roberts and she sounds so sensible and down to earth.
Sugar and olive oil mix in the shower, exfoliates and adds moisture.
I don’t usually use kitchen products on my skin but I might give this a go to see how it performs.
I love olive oil on my hair sometimes, i also use coconut oil from time to time such a great product for hair. but not a fan of the smell
I’d rather apply it to my salad thanks.
My dry skin responds well to all types of oil, but I’m not sure if I’d use olive oil. This is an oil that I use to cook with, use in salad dressings etc.
I’ve heard of this before, although I can’t remember ever trying it.
I would never have thought of that.
I like to apply a moisturizer before sunscreen
Nope thanks, not on my face. Hair yes, why not. And on salads 😀
Salads yes please, face no thanks.
This doesn’t appeal to me.
I sometimes use coconut oil in my hair and on my skin.
I think Sophia Loren said the same thing, decades ago. I’m sticking with rosehip oil.
I don’t think it will be comfortable on my skin.
She always has such a huge smile and always looks so lovely.
It would irritate my eyes if I accidently touched my face near my eyes. They are super sensitive!!!
Coconut oil!
I prefer shea butter.
I’d rather use a moisturiser but an interesting tip
Hell no.
I can see the logic, but think I’ll pass.
Yeah probs struggling with the smell and greasiness so will keep it for the salads
Oils are now so popular, i think the consistency of bought oils is nicer though
I would be happy to try the olive oil on my face, but not so sure about using it on my hair.
It would tend to be oily on my face, I feel happier with trusted face and body oils, just me though!
i’ll have to try this
It obviously works for her, but I won’t be copying.
