The products you need to wake up tired skin, according to an expert

While matte skin comes and goes, radiant, dewy skin is having a nonstop moment in the spotlight.

The challenge is figuring out how to get-the-glow when you’re not feeling so fresh in the AM. The good news is that it’s entirely possible to wake up tired-looking skin in moments, thanks to the latest innovations in skin-prepping formulas and base colour.

We caught up with top makeup artist Ross Andrewartha, global director of artistry for Armani Beauty, to share his tricks and formula picks for creating a dewy (yet shine-free) finish in the morning, here with Holly Titheridge of Base Colour.

Clue: it starts way before you apply base to your face and requires a touch of patience, as demonstrated here on Holly Titheridge, Founder and Editor of Base Colour.

Giorgio Armani Crema Nera Acqua Pantelleria Antioxidant Treatment Lotion

Glowing skin doesn’t start with makeup—it starts with skincare. “There’s no point applying base before your skin is hydrated,” says Andrewartha, noting that even if your skin doesn’t feel tight and dry, it will still be dehydrated from the night before. A fast-absorbing serum with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides, “will wake your skin up and give your skin a supple, flexibility that brings out the best in your base.” Just remember to wait a minute for it to absorb. Trust us, your patience will pay off.

By now you know that primer should be the last step of your skincare routine, before you reach for colour. But to create a complexion that will glow, Andrewartha says to consider where you place the formula. “A luminous formula like this one is key because it really gives your skin that bright, multidimensional feel, but don’t slather it all over,” he says. Instead, concentrate on the high points of the face where you really want radiance, such as the cheekbones, below your brows and around the edges of your face. “Then give it another minute to soak in—pausing for a moment to allow the formula to settle on your skin is what will give you that long-lasting glow,” he says.

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

There’s a reason this iconic formula (which launched 20 years ago) is a makeup artist favourite: “It’s a super-hydrating base that really does give skin a lit-from-within finish,” says Andrewartha, who swears by applying it with a fluffy brush to get the best results. “The thing about self-setting foundations that women might not realise is that you only need the thinnest layers to get amazing coverage.” Meaning less is more. Apply one or two pumps to the back of your hand and just kiss the brush to the base. “Then buff the colour into skin so you get that incredibly natural finish.”

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Lightweight Liquid Concealer

“Concealing is one of the most important brightening steps—this is where you really bring the light to your face,” says Andrewartha, noting that the innovation in foundation these days means that your base should even out your skin-tone and do most of the heavy-lifting. “That’s why I always opt for a concealer that is two shades lighter than a client’s skin-tone,” he says. Take a brush (yes, the same rules apply as foundation) and using a light-touch, extend it from your inner eye, under the lower lash line and then all the way up to the temple. “That’s my secret to a lit-from-within finish.”
