How-to: Anne Hathaway Catwoman make-up

The midnight screenings of The Dark Knight Rises are underway, the capes and masks have been dusted clean and superhero fans are about to leap off buildings (not really, but it sounds cool).

But let’s talk about something a little closer to our own hearts – Catwoman, and her beauty revolution over the years.

It all started in the 1960s when Julie Newmar starred in the Batman TV series. She pretty much set the benchmark for Catwoman’s beauty style with her literal cat-eyes and headband ears.

In 1992, Michelle Pfeiffer brought Catwoman back into the spotlight, giving the character a big boost of sensuality with her red lips (and insanely amazing body).

Come 2004, and Halle Berry carried on the red lip look, adding a subtle wash of black shadow on the eyelids. And it seems that Anne Hathaway is modernising the cult character even more in The Dark Knight Rises. The lip colour is more pigmented, the hair is primped and the eyes are hardly visible. Mysterious, indeed!

So now that you’ve had your history lesson on Catwoman’s beauty look, it’s time to recreate it yourself (latex suit totally optional of course!)

You need three things from your beauty shelves – a bright red lipstick, liquid eyeliner and lengthening mascara. That’s it – three products to get the puurrrfect Catwoman look (sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves with that one!)

The How-to:
1.) Create a winged eyeliner look (cat eyes!) using a liquid eyeliner. (Click here for our winged eyeliner video tutorial)
2.) Apply two heavy coats of lengthening mascara on the top lashes only.
3.) Pucker up your pout with a striking matte finish red lip. Click here to get the essential red lip.

And voila! You’re done. Now put claws out and ‘purrrrr’ the night away, ladies!

Are you keen to see Anne Hathaway play Catwoman? Would you try the Catwoman make-up look?

Julie Newmar: Batman TV Series (1966)

She epitomised the ‘cat eyes’ with her obvious eyeliner flick, arched eyebrows and highlights under her lower lash.

Eartha Kitt: Batman TV Series (1968)

A catwoman can be of any race, colour, shape or size – yes, that was the message in this one.

Michelle Pfeiffer: Batman Returns (1992)

The mask continued, but the lips became brighter in the 90s.

Halle Berry: Catwoman (2004)

The belly-baring costume screamed louder than her character, but we’re loving Berry’s smudged eyeshadow.

Anne Hathaway: The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Her lips and noir black hair are enough to make us fall in love.
