Our under eyes are finicky little things. First of all, they can’t keep a secret. Bags? You’ve had a sleepless night, try a soothing eye cream. Dark circles? You’re stressed, try a pair of brightening eye patches. Puffy and red? You’ve been crying, you might want to apply a touch of concealer. Hollowness? Well, this one’s not as straightforward. But our guess? If it’s not genetics, chances are you’re likely due for some internal and external TLC.
What are hollow under eyes?
You know when we cry and our eyes become super puffy? Basically, this is the opposite. Sunken eyes (medically labelled as tear trough hollows) describe the appearance of longer, sunken and shadowed skin that can emerge from underneath our eyes to the top of our cheekbones.
According to Dr. Jonathan Hopkirk, Laser Clinics Global Medical Director, “[hollow eyes] are the changes in the fat pads which support the overlying skin and changes in the skin itself such as reduced elasticity and wrinkling.”
What causes hollow and sunken eyes?
As with most conditions, there isn’t just one cause. “The under eye area (aka the ‘tear trough’), is an area that hollows out with age, on account of changes in the tissues in this area,” Dr. Hopkirk tells bh. This condition can also be exacerbated by genetics or lifestyle factors such as stress, dehydration, smoking, or poor nutrition.
How to get rid of hollow and sunken eyes?
Dermal fillers
“Treatments like dermal fillers in the under eye region, act by ‘filling’ in the areas where there is lost or redistributed volume,” Dr. Hopkirk explains.
“The shadow which is cast by the nasal bridge on the under eye region can appear more pronounced when there is tear trough volume loss. When this area is restored with small amounts of dermal filler, the shadowing and subsequent darkness is significantly softened, leaving the patient looking fresher and less tired.”
So, how do you know whether this is the solution for you? “To be a suitable candidate for restoration of lost volume in this part of the face, it is important that the patient has a true deficiency of volume or ‘hollowness’, as opposed to the illusion of the area being sunken due to darker pigment,” he noted.
Increase your collagen intake
Once we turn 25, our body stops producing collagen naturally. Collagen is a protein that is responsible for the structural integrity of our skin. Without it, our skin can appear thinner, weaker, and on occasion, more rigid.
Low levels of collagen cause the eyes to sink back into the eye sockets, making them appear hollow. So how do you increase your collagen levels? Try a daily supplement like the Nature’s Way Beauty Collagen Tablets ($30, Woolworths) to keep your skin looking plump and firm.
Retinol eye cream
When it comes to plumping fine lines and wrinkles, a retinol serum will always deliver. However, the vitamin A derivative is typically too strong for the delicate skin under our eyes, particularly when that skin is already looking on the thinner side. The solution? A retinol-infused eye cream. Daily application of an eye cream like the Olay Retinol 24 Eye Cream Fragrance Free ($35.99, Chemist Warehouse) will help to prevent fine lines from forming, which work towards keeping the under eye area looking supple and youthful.
Use makeup to your advantage
With a bit of strategic placement, makeup can enhance the features we love and downplay the parts we don’t. As we’re all across, concealer works to eliminate dark circles and brighten our under eyes. However, if you throw a few extra shades into the mix, you can not only squash the purple hues but also add enough dimension to minimise the appearance of hollowness.
The trick? After you’ve applied your regular concealer, go in again, this time with a concealer that is two to three shades lighter than the deepest point of your under eye, and gently blend the edges outward using a brush.
A combination we’re currently loving is the IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye ($40, Adore Beauty) and Huda Beauty’s Conceal & Blend Complexion Brush ($38, Adore Beauty).
How to fix under eye hollows naturally
If you don’t want to go down the injectables route, let’s begin by ruling out the basics. Hollow eyes can be a repercussion of dehydration. Ensure you’re hitting your adequate daily intake of water, getting eight hours of sleep, and avoiding triggers that severely impact our collagen production like smoking or excessive alcohol intake.

Have you experienced hollow under eyes? Do you have any tips to plump them up?
Good tips!
honestly
I think I need to get a good retinol eye cream.
Yeh that one by Olay looks good
oh okay thanks
Thanks for the info, always good to hear about how to fix problems
Taking collagen suppliments when turn 25 ? Really?
Eye cream and sleep!
That’s true Gloss_Geek.
facts
Thanks for the tips
Definitely hydration with raw fruit. Avoiding dehydrating stuff as mentioned: also coffee, black green teas, alcohol, high protein diet etc
Moderated again? What is banned to say?
I think it’s just a technical glitch yoh – don’t worry too much – I expect this will get sorted in time. : )
You used the word h y d r a tion – anything with that prefix triggers moderation. It’s SO annoying!
oh thanks
They didn’t mention Thyroid Eye Disease this can cause hollows under the eyes and bulges.
Collagen supplements (minced remains of fish scales, cow remains etc) do not get trough your tummy into eye hollows, nope. Science.
That sounds so gross when you say minced remains 😂
I don’t have hollows under my eyes but I do have bags under my eyes :(. It’s more noticeable now since I no longer need to wear glasses.
I used to have bad eye hollowing, the only things that fix it are lots of sleep, drinking a lot of water and finding the right mix of eye creams. I’ve improved it greatly in the last few months through these methods. Freeze Frame Revitaleyes and John Plunketts Collagen Eye Lift eye creams are really helping.
Great recommendations, thank you
thanks
Hollow eyes not an issue, puffiness is and could benefit from some brightening up but tend to react to Vit C not game to use under my eyes
I do the best I can with a great eye cream and concealer.
Thanks for tips.
Need more sleep.
Good tips, I think a great concealer really helps with the appearance of this.
My dark circles are genetic. I can conceal them a little, but they are still obvious.
Really interesting article. Eye creams are a must for me.
i’m trying some now
I don’t think I have this – interesting information about it though – I think I have seen some older men with this and it’s probably more noticeable because they don’t tend to wear makeup like us lucky ladies! 🙂
These tips are definitely for me!
Thanks for sharing. Great tips.
Thankfully don’t have this issue.
Some fantastic advice even though I use the best eye serums I still have some dark circles under my eyes, at least the eye serums have faded them quite a lot so I am hoping with long term use that they will fade away.
I’ve noticed some hollowing lately particularly if I haven’t had enough sleep. I also drink lots of water and use eye creams and serums.
Wow!!! Love these tips and tricks!
Great article, I think I have all the basics down pat so perhaps it is time to invest in a retinol under eye cream
same here its just pricey
I appreciate all the BH tips and I love reading their articles but is it always necessary to go against nature? I’m referring to the “Dermal Fillers”. Aren’t we beautiful just the way we are?
I suppose some people are interested in those products, personally not myself.
I guess everyone is different and takes a unique approach to solving their issues/insecurities. Some may love dermal fillers, personally I would not go down that route, but each to their own.
anything for that young look
I don’t want sunken eyes!
same i’m stuck with them
Luckily I don’t have this problem
lucky
Very good tips and tricks
Great tips
I have hollowness under the eyes and really don’t want to do fillers so will try these tips and see how I go
I’m more prone to puffiness than hollowness. I keep myself very well h y d r a ted.
I always have really puffy eye bags which never go away.
Thanks for the tips!
Mine are in part due to genetics and probably dehydration, though I didn’t factor in stress.
Collagen tablets could be worth trying.
No this is the article that’s screaming my name ..
honestly same
I have hollow under eyes and they have been the bane of my existence since I was a kid (thanks alot mum!). I’ve loved looking permanently tired and haggard since I was 12…
They’ll never go away but I found they always look better with more sleep and when I’ve drunk more water.
Unfortunately it seems, most Mediterraneans, Indians and Middle Eastern people have this issue!
that explains alot thankyou
Interesting article with some good tips.
Agreed!
I prefer eye COSRX snail patches and hyaluronic acid with moisturizer
A good eye cream and concealer can fix this.
Might have to add retinol eye cream to the routine!
worth it!
The Olay Retinol 24 Eye Cream is a good and affordable
Thanks for a great and interesting read, very helpful.
yes thanks
If there was one thing I could change about myself (other than an overall “supermodel transformation”, ha), it’d probably be my undereye area.
Thanks for sharing this useful information.
I’ve been wanting to try the Olay eye cream.
Sleep definitely helps, along with using sunscreen and hydrating. But otherwise, there’s not a lot we can do to fight the ageing process, so it’s nice to embrace it!
yeah worth a good try
I need to try all these tips!
OMG i thought this was just me with this problem
thanks for the tips everyone
I have very pronounced eye hollows, just like most of my relatives.
