Helena Christensen Has A Rather *Interesting* Beauty Routine…

The ’90s might be a bit of a distant memory by now (ouch, we know), but it seems like everything to come out of it is still reigning supreme. ’90s lip liners, tick. Cindy Crawford’s incredible bouncy blowout, um, absolutely. Heck, even the (OG) supermodels are still going strong.

And no matter if during the ’90s or now, we’re pretty damn here for a Victoria’s Secret angel. There’s something that feels a little bit special about find out the beauty secrets of a star that’s strutted that stage. But Helena Christensen is here to tell us (via a chat with The Zoe Report) that she’s still a totally down to earth woman. That, and we’ve realised, she literally hasn’t aged a day. So maybe it’s worth grabbing a pen and paper to jot down her skin care routine. It can’t hurt, can it?

Helena Christensen Skin Care Routine

Over the years she’s described herself as a ‘nerd’ when it comes to the ingredient lists in her beauty products. And because of this, she’s specifically chosen her routine a little more cautiously.

She’s a ‘sleep in’ kind of woman, so everything gets done within half an hour of walking out the door (impressive). But her aversion to heavy face makeup (preferring dewy, hydration over coverage) probably helps her save a few seconds in the morning.

Her diehard love for all things hydrating – she’s found her skin needs a lot of extra hydration help – has meant that she loves all things mists, serums, oils and especially masks. In fact, she even sleeps in a mask occasionally (although she doesn’t recommend for the sake of your pillow).

Okay, now here comes the kind of (well, literally) wild part. When Helena is ‘upstate’ she really reconnects with nature (we’re here for it). In the mornings, she “go[es] down to the river and scrub[s] [her] whole body with either a sugar or salt scrub, then get[s] into the cold river water”. Then she “grab[s] a big handful of mud from the river, put[s] it all over [her] body [and] sits[s] in the sun and feel it or the wind, listen[ing] to the birds”. Yep. But she counts it as her meditation.

Of course, the routine includes washing the mud off and then slathering her body with hydrating coconut oil (we’d recommend the nourishing Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Body Oil, $11.99 at Priceline). And look it all makes sense, it’s definitely a relaxing, nourishing ritual. As for incorporating the hack into your own routine, if you’re looking to emulate it from the less outdoorsy comfort of your shower, consider picking up a Pure Fiji Coconut Sugar Rub ($49.95 at Oz Hair and Beauty).

Helena Christensen Iconic Red Lip

As a long term die-hard red lip wearer (it’s kind of her signature beauty look), to make it into Helena’s inner-circle of red lipsticks is pretty high praise.

For Helena though, her lipstick isn’t just reserved for her lips. She’s a big ‘dab it across your face (anywhere from cheekbones to eyelids) with your finger tips’ fan.

Her current fave has a big bold red impact: the Lisa Eldridge True Velvet Lip Colour in ‘Velvet Ribbon’ ($51.25 at Lisa Eldridge). She loves to add a glossy layer of Vaseline ($5.50 at Woolworths) over the top, saying “it’s such an easy way to elevate your look subtly”. Agreed.

And because she’s such a fan, she believes everybody can pull off a red lip. If you’re thinking about it, Helena says (and not to steal another tagline) “just do it”.

We guess simplicity (and access to the best treatments in the biz) are bound to offer great results. Or it could be her simply stunning genetics, either way we’ll be referring to Helena’s routine whenever we feel lost in the beauty world.

  1. Closest I’ve got to this is Iceland’s Blue Lagoon where you can smother yourself in the clay (does terrible things to your hair though!). I still don’t look like her sadly.
