This Beauty Tool Is Accelerating Skin Ageing, According To A Plastic Surgeon

Meghan Markle swears by her gua sha. In fact, Eva Mendes even relies on it to “decrease puffiness and reduce inflammation”. So with such big names and beautiful faces vouching for this beauty tool, can you blame us for not drinking the Kool-Aid? Well, as much as we love a celebrity skin care routine, it’s important to also check in with the experts. And according to facial plastic surgeon, Dr Konstantin Vasyukevich, this ancient Chinese sculpting device isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The potential negatives of using a gua sha…

“Even when you’re pulling your skin up, [a gua sha] is still harmful because gravity will eventually pull the skin back down and stretch your skin,” he explained.

So while the short-term results might have our jawline looking chiseled and our cheekbones sculpted, he does warn that overtime we mightn’t be so pleased. Uh-oh. “The gua sha will actually accelerate skin ageing due to the fact that it is stretching the skin,” he continued.

As for a jade roller, however? “Between these two I would always prefer the jade roller because both will work well for lymphatic drain massage but the jade roller doesn’t pull on the skin as intensely.”

Our favourite jade rollers…

Revlon Cooling Facial Roller

“Been wanting to try these and it didn’t disappoint, very easy to use and clean. Placed it in the fridge and towards the end of my face mask I use this to really get the cream in my face.” – Anncredible

$22.95 (currently $11.47) at Chemist Warehouse

Have you ever used a gua sha or a jade roller? If so, what did you think?
