By now we all understand the importance of sun protection. After all, the “slip, slop, slap” motto has pretty much been burned into our brains. And whilst we’ve perfected our skin care routine for every concern, finding the right sunscreen for your skin type that doesn’t break you out or ruin your makeup can be a bit of a mission.
So we spoke to Emma Hobson, Dermalogica’s Director of Education, to learn exactly how to identify your skin type, as well as how to find the right sunscreen for it.
What is my skin type?
As luck (or biology) would have it, your skin type is determined by your genetics. Emma explains that your skin type is “categorised by assessing the amount of oil secreted by the skin. Your skin type doesn’t fluctuate much month to month, it will slowly and progressively change as you age.”
And unfortunately, if you’re a woman, your skin is also more likely to become drier post-menopause.
There are four main skin types, as explained by Emma:
Combination skin: “The T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) are more oily than the rest of the face, and you experience an oily shine down the centre. In the T-zone you may find some blackheads and congestion and occasionally the odd breakout. The skin on the rest of the face is fairly well balanced.”
Oily skin: “The skin on the entire face is generally oily. [This is due] to overactive oil glands. You can be congested and experience breakouts anywhere on the face.”
Dry skin: “The skin doesn’t produce enough oil. This is not to be confused with the skin condition of dehydration, when the skin is lacking in moisture (not oil). It is not common for young people generally to have dry skin; for the majority of people it comes with age. The skin often feels taught and tight, and you won’t have any open pores or an oily shine.”
Normal skin: “Not too much oil secretion and not too little, normal skin [is generally] perfectly balanced. No visible open pores, congestion, blackheads, redness or pigmentation, including freckles.”
Why is it important to use sunscreen specific to your skin type?
“In the past, many sunscreens contained oil, as well as comedogenic (pore-clogging) ingredients such as artificial colours,” says Emma. The bottom line? They were more likely to be contributing to breakouts. But as Emma explains, there are many SPF products today that feature feather-light formulations without oils.
“Sunscreens today are created not to simply protect the skin against UV rays,” Emma explains. “They are created to protect against oxidation from free radicals, as well as being treatment products to achieve good skin health, and work with your skin type and your skin condition for ultimate performance and results.”

Very bad. I would never put sunscreen onto my lips
I usually just rub a little of what I am putting on my face into my lips
Chapstick have nice flavours with a SPF, the strawberry one is good.
The Dermalogica one sounds good

My name is MICHEAL RACHEL. When I read a testimony online on how DR DAVID the great and most powerful spell caster helped to bring back Divorce husband or wife EX LOVER. I was wondering how this can be true, Because many have failed me in the past without any result from them. I just let the post pass by and move on to the forum. To my notice under again, Some person posted and said tested and trusted spell caster. After reading through the mail it was this same man DR DAVID she was talking about. So I have no other option than to really check up how he works. I was totally devastated when my beloved husband left me. It was like my entire world vanishing into sorrow and pain. I know it sounds weird but out of all the spell casters I contacted, he was the only one to give me that impression of being so true and trustful. More than his words, He brought my husband back and he made all my wishes come true. He is now loyal, pays attention to me, he offers me flowers every Sunday, and we often go out at the cinema and the restaurant. My husband came to me and apologized for the wrongs he did and promised never to do it again. Ever since then, everything has returned back to normal. My family are living together happily again.. I will be forever thankful for turning my life from hell to heaven! I believe those who need help should get to him for help. May God continue to use you to save broken relationships. There are so many good sunscreens available. I love Reef, Bondi Sands, and Nivea.
yes
Avene is good too
I have combination skin and am currently using the Avene Aqua-Fluid SPF50+ on my face. I won it in a prize pack from bh last year and it’s pretty good so far. Only been using it for around a week so I’ll wait a bit longer before I do a review on it.
try an oil-based one as some are different
that is a lovely one
So many options
ok
I tried few brands, I am using Cancer Council at the moment.
I love SPF. I really like the Cancer Council Matte Invisible sunscreen. I just got the Mecca one after years of it being on my Wishlist. I cracked.
I usually use the Cancer one as i feel they would not endorse a product unless it was good
oooh, mecca one looks interesting!
I use a La Roche Posay one but as I have combination skin maybe I’ll try something new for my next sunscreen
I’m a big fan of IZ. The Neutrogena H y d r o Boost one sounds good – the moisturiser in that range is excellent!
Good brand
Id like to try the La-Roche Posay one since its for dry skin.
I have dry skin but don’t get too hung up on what sunscreen as long as it is SPF 50 .Main thing is to use one every day
The hydro boost sunscreen is pretty good! I’m keen to try the one from Dermalogica
I still stuggle to find the right facial sunscreen that doesn’t break me out or leave a white cast. Hopefully I can find something in this lot of new generation sunscreen
There is a lot of new sunscreen brands around now, especially see them on insta
some new ones i have seen are Avocado zinc, Airy days and Ultra violette
I like that there are specific sunscreens for skin types especially sensitive skin
Living in Australia we really do need to wear Sunscreen 50+ on our Faces and Body. Really love using La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Cream Facial Sunscreen SPF50, but I also like to use Aldi Face Sunscreen 50+ it is very affordable as well as one for the Body.
I’m combination but I’ve definitely noticed my skin getting drier with age
I use both the LRP and the Avene. I also use Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Face and Body.
Good to know. It makes sense for sunscreen to also be good for the skin
The LRP sunscreens are a real winner for me.
I had no idea that there was sunscreen for different skin types.
I didn’t know either, but hey, must generate sales?
I need to pay more attention to this – I usually just look at the SPF when I buy sunscreen.
interesting to know
Unfortunately the best sunscreen for my skin type is No Sunscreen . My skin hates it. I can tolerate some, but skin nope
I have oily skin & love Ultra violette for facial sunscreen, very mattifying. And Beach Fox is my all time favourite for everywhere else.

on it
I often buy Nivea. Great for whole family.
Helpful article, need a new sunscreen.
Thanks for sharing this, it is very useful.
Thanks for the info
I haven’t tried any of these. Next on the list is one of them.
so many new ones on instagram like beauty filter, avocado zinc and Ultra violet too
Sunscreens have come so far
I’d like to try the Avene one as I have normal skin according to the definitions here but it is sensitive
I have a combination skin type, so ill be giving the mecca one a go
I’ve always focused mainly on the SPF rating, but I’ll pay more attention to these things now.
I have sensitive skin and use a sunscreen from Clinique.
Repeat article.
