Do you have a man in your life who hasn’t the faintest clue when it comes to beauty products? Same.
And it’s such a shame too because they’re really missing out. After all, beauty products are for everyone – regardless of gender. Plus, more often than not, when nudged in the right product direction, they’re hooked after the first try.
So if you’re looking to introduce a few game-changers into his routine (so he can see what all the fuss is about), we’ve got some stellar suggestions…
#1 An after-shave moisturiser
You know, he probably thinks that dry, tight and red-raw feeling post-shave is normal. So imagine his delight when he discovers the power a humble moisturiser has at making skin comfortable again. Just make sure it’s a low-irritant formula like TriShave 3in1 Post Shave Moisturising Lotion SPF 30+ (great if he’s a morning shaver with the added sun protection!).
We also love a classic sorbolene cream like the Kenkay® Sorbolene Cream with 10% Vegetable Glycerin for scaly skin. Or treat him to the soothing sensation like the Natio Calming Aftershave Balm or Lab Series 3-in-1 Post-Shave.
- TriShave 3in1 Post Shave Moisturising Lotion SPF 40+ ($11 at trishave.com.au)
- Kenkay® Sorbolene Cream with 10% Vegetable Glycerin ($2.39 at pharmacydirect.com.au)
- Natio Calming Aftershave Balm ($13.95 at Myer)
- NIVEA MEN Sensitive Skin & Stubble Balm ($11.99 at Chemist Warehouse)
#2 Colour-restoring hair products
Discovering grey hairs can knock anyone’s confidence. And if he’s not ready to embrace a salt and pepper mane just yet (although, hello George Clooney), there are some products that can help him camouflage without committing to a complete all-over colour.
Restoria Discreet Colour Restoring Shampoo is one such clever invention. It helps to gradually and gently restore natural-looking colour to grey hair – no ammonia or peroxide necessary. Just For Men Shampoo-In Haircolour is a similar in-shower hair hero and both work best when evenly combed through (we love a Rock & Ruddle Pocket Comb). Or if it’s for one-off special occasions, Schwarzkopf Hair Mascara provides a quick fix.
- Restoria Discreet Colour Restoring Shampoo ($18.49 at Chemist Warehouse)
- Just For Men Shampoo-In Haircolour ($12.99 at Chemist Warehouse)
- Rock & Ruddle Pocket Comb ($14.95 at David Jones)
- Schwarzkopf Hair Mascara ($21.99 at Priceline)
#3 Beard and moustache tamers
The relationship between a man and his facial hair is sacred. They sure are fond of the whiskers they grow. And as such, they should really take care of them.
A beard oil like Urbane Mess Beard Oil, muk Haircare mr muk Beard Oil or the Sebastian Professional SEB MAN The Groom Hair and Beard Oil work wonders for turning tough, prickly hair into soft and touchable coverage.
- Urbane Mess Beard Oil ($6.30 at Woolworths)
- muk Haircare mr muk Beard Oil ($27.95 at mrbirdandco.com.au)
- Sebastian Professional SEB MAN The Groom Hair and Beard Oil ($26.50 at My Haircare)
#4 A lip balm and hand cream
Nobody is immune to chapped lips and rough hands. And if he’s outdoors and on the tools a lot, chances are the skin in these areas has been severely neglected.
It may take a little convincing at first, but once he’s privy to the life-changing hydration a simple lip balm can provide, he’ll be hooked. Trust us. Try easing him in with a simple tube of paw paw; Natralus Natural Paw Paw Lip Butter and Dermal Therapy™ Lip Balm Enriched With PawPaw are both goodies.
As for hand cream, strategically place one on his bedside table and encourage its use before his head hits the pillow. This way, he can’t complain about it feeling ‘sticky’ (that’s just what hydration feels like mate) because all he’s about to do is sleep. Try the HANDSOME Antibacterial Hand Cream or DU’IT Tough Hands if some manly packaging will help.
- Natralus Natural Paw Paw Lip Butter ($6.95 at natralus.com.au)
- Dermal Therapy™ Lip Balm Enriched With PawPaw ($5.49 at Chemist Warehouse)
- HANDSOME Antibacterial Hand Cream ($15.95 at ha.ndso.me)
- DU’IT Tough Hands ($10.49 at Chemist Warehouse)

Have you or the men in your life tried any of the above products?
Lol Belinda!!
My man said we were nearly out of ‘soap’ the other day as he used a small bit of soap left in the soap holder in the shower. He loves his soap! So I showed him a new 4-pack of Palmolive Gold in the vanity bathroom cupboard and he was over the moon – so happy with his simple soaps!!
I use shower gel or body wash, but my husband only likes to use soap. I wonder why?
My Man is a soap man too. A cake of soap last about a week. He is fussy what type he uses though. It must be Vegetable based.
My husband is fussy too. He will only use Velvet soap (which used to be called Sunlight). I will admit it has a nice fragrance, but I’m always happy to try new soaps and gels.
@crystalclear it must have felt like Christmas to him.
That is sweet
aha – now I understand that – he’s being smart only using it where he feels he really needs to. I understand his reasoning!! : )
Ha yes CCW, it’s been months so I’m impressed!
Yep lol, he doesn’t like the feel of moisturisers n his face, i suppose i wouldn;t either, but then I out so much more on my face after the moisturiser, but he likes eye cream and will happily wear that .
My hubby is the same, refuses to use bath gels or anything other then the simple old fashioned soap.
yes me too, on days at home if wear skincare but no makeup, my face can feel really greasy too
Am I right?? 😉
It is nice to know a man will take care of himself for the woman in his life! Some men don’t bother with anything to improve their appearance and I think that shows some disrespect to the woman in their life as women do what they can to look good for their man. Some men are just gorgeous naturally too. Maybe!
No way would my husband colour his hair.
Men seem to look more handsome with their greys . Wish I was able too leave my colour out but I do not suit grey at all.
I totally agree with you, I think my hubby has gotten more handsome as he has gotten older.
I agree with you!
My husband shampoos his beard while in the shower then blow dries it everytime that’s as far as he goes, yet complains if he gets a pimple. I have bought him his own skincare sets and they’ve just sat in the draw or cupboard. He would love it if I did his skincare for him morning and night but that’s not going to happen his lucky his got great genes.
He is pretty good looking.
Needs a bit of care though !
No man in my life so not relevant to me
Time our special fellas got spoilt . Some nice suggestions here too.
Gosh McDreamy has beautiful hair!
My partner would probably love the restoring shampoo, he was talking about covering up his greys today
My man just sticks with the same moisturiser he’s used for the past 15 years
I suppose whatever works, stick with it!
I always recommend unfragranced Sorbolene as shaving cream. I’ve always got some in the shower. Anything with even a mild fragrance can cause red spots after shaving. With Sorbolene, you don’t have to be so rigorous when scrubbing it off afterwards – just splash off any remaining stubble.
My dad loves it too, uses it as a cleanser, moisturiser for the face and body.
No, he uses nothing. Soap yes xD
Yes soap!!
Nice last minute gift suggestions.
My bf won’t use anything greasy on his skin – not even SPF! Does use Ego QV body wash as he has eczema.
My man is not one for skincare products, doesn’t have much hair to worry about & is happy with any liquid soap he gets, but he spends a fortune on beard products. He has shampoos, conditioners, conditioning sprays, moisturising cream, oils & a variety of balms with different degrees of holding power. The man loves his beard 🙂
That is so cool!
Mine can’t grow a beard…
I prefer my hubby’s “salt-and-pepper” hair. It suits him and I can’t imagine him colouring it
I don’t think my hubby would be caught using these items.
No man in my life, but I’ve tried the Dermal Therapy lip balm and the D’uit hand cream and liked both of them.
