Why does the eye area age faster than other areas?
The skin around your eyes is prone to ageing because it’s thinner than anywhere else on your body. “In fact, it’s about 10 times thinner than the skin on the rest of your face,” says William Fennell, Biodroga training director. And as you get older, the connective fibres (read: collagen and elastin) that work to support the skin around your eyes begin to breakdown faster than anywhere on your face. The eye area also contains very few oil glands, which means the body doesn’t keep the skin naturally moisturised, making it prone to dryness.
What should I look for in an anti-ageing eye product?
“The main function of the majority of eye care products is to simply keep the delicate eye area moisturised and nourished,” explains William. “Many of the fine lines you see in your 20s and 30s are actually caused by dehydration.” You can combat this by applying a hydrating eye fluid.
The two other major ageing concerns for the eye area are wrinkles and dark circles. Both of these common skin complaints can be targeted using specific ingredients. “For treating wrinkles, look for products containing vitamin C, peptides, stem cell extracts, fruit acids and retinol,” William recommends. “Dark circles are a little trickier to treat – and can be visible at any age due to shadowing under the eyes from deeper set eye sockets – but you will see a marked improvement using products containing vitamin K, retinol, caffeine, peptides, and cosmetic light reflectors.”
