Most beauty hacks are universal, like using baby powder instead of dry shampoo in a pinch or (safely) heating your eyelash curler for mega-volume. But there are some elements of beauty that become more apparent as we get older, and therefore require entirely new hacks of their own. Ah, what blessings.
The good news? Age is just as number. The even more good news? We’ve got some hacks that will temporarily send these beauty bugbears packing.
These are the best beauty hacks for women over 40.
#1 Mind the facial hair
Isn’t it a cruel joke that the moment you need glasses extra hairs (that you can’t see) begin popping up on your chin and upper lip? Well, rather than flying blind with a pair of tweezers, there are facial hair removal options that will take care of an entire area in one foul swoop. Not to mention, painlessly so – hurrah! Just pop a reminder in your calendar once a month and you and your moustache will never be caught off guard again.

#2 Mask spider veins
Whether you’ve got red ones, purple ones or blue ones, spider veins sure make the stretch marks you worried about at age 15 seem insignificant. Thankfully they should cause no harm or discomfort, but only professional treatments like laser can actually rid you of them. However, if it’s a special occasion and you’d rather them look less spidery, a layer of budge-proof body makeup provides the perfect camouflage. For even, smooth coverage, we recommend applying with a kabuki brush or mitt.

#3 Fake fuller hair
Hair thinning can be caused by a number of things (and actually, it can affect all ages), though female pattern hair loss does often coincide with menopause. If you’re experiencing hair loss, there are some hair treatments that can restore hair density and stimulate better growth over time. But if it’s instant fullness you’re after, hair fibres provide a temporary albeit terrific solution, filling in the hairline and any gaps to conceal sparse areas.

#4 Disguise greys
Whether it’s been a while between appointments or you haven’t got round to using that box dye yet, there are plenty of ways to disguise greys in seconds. Admittedly, these techniques are easier to pull of for dark hair colours, but they’re also the ones to suffer from contrast the most! If you’re dealing with a hefty amount of regrowth, reach for a coloured dry shampoo and lightly spray before brushing through. Only have a few rogue strands to hide? Sweep over them with your tinted brow gel or (colour pending) your mascara.

#5 Embrace tint
If you haven’t already become acquainted with brow tint during lockdown, the DIY hack is worth the know-how. Not only will it help sparse brows look fuller, but if you find your mascara constantly ends up on your eyelids, tinting them will provide a semi-permanent solution. And those greys we were talking about earlier? Any leftover mixture can provide a cheeky top-up.

What’s the best beauty hack you know? Have you tried any of the above?
[INSERT APPLAUSE HERE] Ha ha!!!
Embrace the weird, because it’s what makes you wonderful… Or something like that right??? Ha ha!!!
That sucks about the Flawless thing… Maybe just embrace the ‘stache and be done with it??? The more of us who do the more it would be seen as normal, right???
I personally hate my stache and chin/neck stubble! Errgh PCOS!
hehehehe
Sorry, I kind of muddled my last sentence: what I meant was that the little blonde stash kept wrecking my make-up 🙂
The Flawless stash-buzzer is fabulous! Love it. No more messed up make-up 🙂
But I do agree with you. The more we embrace these things the less it would be looked upon as weird or ‘abnormal’. I am just not game enough hehehehe
Isn’t just made up of tiny razors?
I bought a Schick Hydro Silk and I love it!
I’m off to buy one now!
Great products for any age really
Thanks for the info
Best way to be – positive and accept yourself as you are
That’s beautiful Susmat! 😊
Thanks for the good tips

When I get there, I’m going to try and let the greys show.
Like Cruella!
I purchased a ‘Finishing Touch Flawless’, and I’m extremely happy with it!

Amelia, from the USA!!
Not covered in this article directly but I am too scared to heat my eyelash curler before use. That is insanely risky IMHO.
I had a heated eyelash curler once upon a time. It emitted a very gentle heat!
Great article with variety of products.
Love all the hacks that are written about and I am all for trying all or anything to help aging feel and look better
I can’t believe how fast the age between 40 and 50 went – it was crazy fast! I remember looking at the magazines for beauty decades ago and how they’d have a decade per page pair, and then I was in my 20’s and was at the beginning. Now I’m feeling more at the end! That went too fast!
It seems like yesterday that I was 30 and about to give birth to my first.
haha I love this article. Still not there yet Phew!
Any facial creams I’ve ever tried are way too strong for my sensitive (facial) skin and smell terrible.
Keep it Simole. Try La Roche Posay Lipikar Baume or Hada Labo.
I have a Finishing Touch Flawless which I love and use regularly.
All of the above! I try not to stress too much but it’s good we have all these option!
ooh this is good to read re spider veins. Mine have just popped up and I hate them so this article has come at the best time. My neighbour was asking me what she could use so I guess we will both try it now. 🙂
I hate spider veins too! It’s a great hack!
I’m always having to deal with facial hair.
Same here GeeJ. Another beauty on here recommended drinking spearmint tea to reduce facial hair growth!
I used the 1000 hours Brow Dye Kit again today. My lifesaver. My eyebrows seem to be disappearing. I have to dye them, fill them in & also use brow gel.
I’m getting white hairs among my black eyebrows!
eek! Why do you need hacks if 40+ ?
I’m probably lucky I haven’t faced these issues just yet.
I used to use Sally Hansen airbrush legs when I was a teen. Ahh the memories
Thank you for the advice!
