Ask any skin care aficionado if they use a facial oil in their daily skin care routine, and the answer will probably be yes. They’d know that a facial oil can help to nourish, replenish and care for their skin, but what they may not realise is that by choosing a skin care oil that’s rich in plant oils, they can also help to address multiple skin problems and concerns. To find out exactly which plant oils are best for different skin concerns, we turned to Trilogy in-house skin care expert, Corinne Morley.
The benefits of using plant-based facial oils
But first, why should we opt for plant-based oils, when there are so many different types of natural oils for skin available? “Pure plant oils are at the heart of our natural skin care because they’re a great way of delivering high concentrations of active ingredients to your skin – naturally,” explains Trilogy in-house skin care expert, Corinne Morley. “They are excellent for all skin types [to help] deliver hydration and nourishment.”
As an added benefit, according to Corinne, those with sensitive skin can find pure plant oils less irritating than mineral versions, and many pure plant oils can also help to regulate the skin’s own oil production and help rebalance oily and combination skin.
The best plant oils with antioxidants
Rosehip, cherry, goji and baobab oils are all rich in antioxidants which, according to Corinne, makes them excellent for shielding the skin from damage caused by free radicals. “Antioxidants protect the skin by binding with free-radicals, preventing them from attaching to healthy skin cells in a process termed ‘quenching’. This helps ensure the integrity of these cells, promoting healthier, younger-looking skin,” she explains.
The best plant oils for protecting against skin ageing and damage
Arm yourself with blackcurrant and mango seed oil to help protect and restore your complexion. “Blackcurrant oil is particularly high in vitamin C, which helps reduce free-radical damage that can lead to skin ageing and tissue damage, while mango seed oil is high in essential fatty acids, including oleic acid, which has great restorative properties for the skin,” says Corinne.
The best plant oils for protecting against environmental pollution
If you’ve never heard of kukui seed oil, it’s time to get to know this supercharged, antioxidant-rich ingredient. “Kukui oil is rich in vitamins A, C and E, all of which are powerful antioxidants that can help protect the skin from free-radical damage caused by the environmental pollutants we are exposed to daily,” explains Corinne.
The best plant oils for replenishing softness and elasticity
According to Corinne, the combination of macadamia nut, papaya, apricot and grapeseed oils is high in levels of essential fatty acids and vitamins. “This combination ensures that the skin is deeply moisturised, leaving the skin feeling soft and nourished,” she says.
The best plant oils for supporting the skin’s natural protective barrier
Karanja, mustard seed, passionflower and pistachio oils are all bursting with essential fatty acids, making them ideal for helping to support and protect the skin. “Karanja oil and mustard seed oil are high in essential fatty acids – particularly oleic acid – and have restorative properties for the skin, as well as having been known to support wound healing,” says Corinne. “Passionflower is also high in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, and is supported by pistachio – a gentle oil suitable for all skin types.”
