As far as recent celeb glow-ups, Anne Hathaway is a standout. From her impeccable updos to her glowing skin, this last year has well and truly belonged to The Princess Diaries star’s showstopping beauty looks. As always, we’ve been scanning the internet for any makeup hack, exercise routine or beauty tip Anne has shared. And until this point, we’ve come up with hardly anything.
So from the lady who keeps her cards (and her skin care routine) close to her chest, here is Anne’s must-have beauty item (if you can even call it that?)…
What is Anne Hathaway’s must-have beauty item?
Without giving too much away, Anne’s choice was, well, kind of surprising.
It’s nothing wildly left of centre like rubbing the eyeball gunk of some endangered species onto your pores under a full moon, but it also wouldn’t have made our top 10 guesses either. Good thing we didn’t receive this question during a round of Family Feud…
“I mean you can’t go wrong with water,” said Anne when posed the question by Vogue. “If you have it and it’s clean you’re very, very lucky so hydrate.”
While some might find her answer a little safe she does make a valid point.
Of course, no one is arguing with that. But as far as beauty must-haves go? We thought she might’ve opted for a product sitting on a shelf. And as a second option, that’s exactly what she did.
“I really love face sheets and eye patches,” specifically from the J-beauty brand, Shiseido. Though she didn’t specify the exact product, we take Anne as being a fan of the Shiseido Vital Perfection Uplifting & Firming Express Eye Mask With Retinol ($109 at Harvey Norman).
As with most J-beauty brands, Shiseido largely focuses on a simplistic and gentle routine that leaves the skin looking plump and feeling soft.
If you’re yet to dip a toe into the skin-soothing world of Japanese beauty, we recommend Bioré’s Yuzu Lemon + Ginseng Brightening Jelly Cleanser ($10.99 at Amazon) or anything from Hada Labo’s hyaluronic acid-powered range. We love the Moisturising Facial Sheet Mask ($6.95 at Adore Beauty) as a slightly more affordable alternative to Anne’s pick.

What is your must-have beauty item?
I mean, she’s not wrong! I’m sure stellar genetics, talent and money help too. Good for her – she’s a stunner inside and out.
She is stunning with or without water.
A moisturiser and a lip balm.
My must haves atm are juicy essence and plumping serum
Me too, Anne!
I like to use eye cream and face serums. And sunscreen too
I do too, but I still dont look like her!!
A good serum is a must have for me.
Drinking lots of it or using it on her skin? I guess it’s a beauty item we can’t live without LOL
I can’t live without my face oils – I find these much better than a serum moisturiser combination.
I love facial oils, gua sha and kansa wand
Love a hydrating lip balm and lipstick, and also a serum!
A good plumping serum, and lots of water.
Yes she is right we all need water .
I really like Anne
Me too, she’s seems very down to earth
Can’t argue with it, really. And some would love to have the access we have to water.
Yes we are very lucky to have good clean water
My hair cream or hair oil is my must have
I drink lots of water, my must have product is zinc, I use it on my face daily.
Yep, staying hydrated is the best beauty tip for everyone to follow
I drink water by the bucketful, so I appreciate having safe, clean water.
My #1 skincare must have is rosehip oil.
Good Moisturiser.
Must have beauty item – I’d agree with her – water! Can’t get better than that really!
She looks amazing
Stay hydrated is not exactly a ground breaking tip!
Well shes totally right. Good reminder for me to drink some more water.
My must haves are SPF and serums with AHAs
I really want to try the Hado Labo mask!
A facial exfoliator and lip balm.
Japanese beauty brands are great
Atm probably a juicy plumping serum.
I too love moisturising sheets. I just wish I had the energy to use them more often. My skin does feel fabulous after I do use them.
More water, what a novel idea…
I love masks and exfoliators too
I agree with her, water is a must but I don’t like eye patches or face sheets; I prefer a clay mask
It’s easy to forget how lucky we are to have access to clean, safe, water.
