Spotlight on pedicure etiquette

Ever popped your shoes on after a pedicure, only to stuff up the fresh polish? Or cursed yourself for forgetting to shave your legs? Stress less. We’ve put together the dos and don’ts of getting a pedicure so you can enjoy your pampering sesh from start to finish…

DO:

Research
Before booking an appointment, check whether the salon follows hygienic and sanitary practices so you avoid the risk of infection. Read reviews online by people who’ve had a treatment there before, go to a salon that’s recommended by a friend, or drop by the salon yourself and have a look around.

Point out blisters, corns, bunions, or ingrown toenails
Before your pedicure, tell your therapist if you have any issues with your feet so they know not to use any tools or products on that area. The point is to walk out of there with prettier feet, not in a world of pain!

Wear thongs or sandals
If you’ve ever gone to a pedi appointment wearing closed shoes only to walk out wearing disposable paper flats, you will have learnt your lesson! Be sure to wear (or take) a pair of thongs or open-toe sandals so you don’t smudge your nail polish on the way home.

Sit back, relax and catch up on your trashy mag reading!
Getting a pedi is a real treat, so make sure you take time to enjoy the experience. Play around with the massage chair settings, scroll through Insta, flick through magazines or read the latest beautyheaven articles…  You deserve some ‘me’ time!

DON’T:

Rock up with smelly, dirty feet
It’s just common courtesy to wash your feet before your appointment. It’ll save your therapist from dealing with smelly feet and save you the embarrassment!

Worry about having hairy legs
Clean feet is the most important thing – your therapist won’t be fazed by a little fuzz on your legs. They’ve seen it all before so a little hair is not worth fretting about!

Let them trim your cuticles
This is a big no-no for both manicures and pedicures. Repeatedly cutting the skin on your cuticles can make your skin grow back thicker and tougher over time, and in some cases, create an open wound that attracts bacteria. Just let your therapist know you’d rather they avoid cutting your cuticles, but you’re happy to push your cuticles back.

Talk on your phone
Just like you, other people will in the salon getting pampered, and no one wants to hear about the latest goss from your weekend while they’re trying to relax. Stay off the phone and just relax. #respect
