It would be an understatement to say that pregnancy puts women through a lot. Aside from the obvious (hormonal surges! Cravings! Weight gain! etc), there are a few bodily changes that are super common yet rarely talked about. Enter Katy Perry.
The singer (who, btw, is currently nearing the end of her third trimester), recently appeared on the Kyle & Jackie O show to share how she’s faring with motherhood so far. And specifically, the one symptom that’s giving her grief.
“Everything is swollen. My hands are swollen, my feet are starting to swell,” she said, adding that she’s succumbed to wearing sandals everywhere.
“I’m really grateful for my body, and I have so much respect for other women going through this process,” she continued. “You get a whole new viewpoint being pregnant.”
For the interview, Katy wore a long-sleeved white crop top with the phrase Smile (the name of her latest album) written in rainbow letters across her chest. Although the 35-year-old admitted she’d had second thoughts about her outfit…
@katyperry
“I wanted to wear this piece of merch that I had made for my new record,” she explained, showing off her baby bump on camera. “But I was looking at it and I was like, ‘It’s a crop top. Can I wear that? I’m going to be a mum. But then I was like, ‘f**k it! I can still be young and fun and wear a crop top!’”
For the record, it’s totally normal for mums-to-be to experience some mild swelling in the legs and feet.
“Swelling is caused by your body holding more water than usual when you’re pregnant,” the NSH website states. “Throughout the day the extra water tends to gather in the lowest parts of the body, especially if the weather is hot or you have been standing a lot. The pressure of your growing womb can also affect the blood flow in your legs. This can cause fluid to build up in your legs, ankles and feet.”
If it happens suddenly or is painful, however, it could be an indicator of high blood pressure or deep vein thrombosis (which warrants an immediate trip to the doctor).
In the meantime any mums, like Katy, suffering from swelling should try these tips (as per the Mayo Clinic):
- Stay off your feet. Avoid standing for long periods. When you can, sit with your feet up and occasionally rotate your feet at the ankles and gently flex your feet to stretch your calf muscles. Better yet, lie down with your legs elevated.
- Sleep on your left side. This takes pressure off the large vein that returns blood from the lower half of your body to your heart (inferior vena cava). It also might help if you elevate your legs slightly with pillows.
- Wear compression stockings. Your health care provider might recommend wearing supportive tights or stockings during the day.
- Be physically active every day. Take walks, ride a stationary bike or swim laps in a pool.
- Stand or walk in the pool. Although there’s little research on the use of water pressure for foot and ankle swelling, standing or walking in a pool seems to help compress tissues in the legs and might provide temporary relief from swelling during pregnancy.
- Wear loose clothing. Tight clothing can restrict blood flow. Don’t wear socks or stockings with tight bands on the ankles or calves.

What was the weirdest pregnancy symptom you experienced?
I’ve never had children. Katy has looked great during her pregnancy.
Katy Perry has looked positively glowing throughout her pregnancy and yes I agree pregnancy can have some terrible side effects, such as swelling of the hands and feet and morning sickness all day long.
Love that picture of her with the flowers and birds background! Don’t do procreation myself, so have no idea what happens.
…well crop top is great to wear as she has the bubble going. She looks fab and radiant. Congratulations girl =D
She looks great! Never been pregnant before and I have a feeling I wouldn’t handle it well
She still looks fabulous
Ditto. I can’t even commit to a pet.
She is looking healthy
I’m pet-free & child-free too, thank goodness!
No more babies for me. That was way in the past and none of my girls are even interested in adding babies into their lives.
No more babies for me either. Pregnancy isn’t easy. I found the morning sickness the worst thing to deal with. It disappeared by the time I was around 16ish weeks thankfully. It was much worse the second time.
Pregnancy is a rollercoaster, for sure.
I never had any experience like this throughout my three pregnancies. I think I was blessed though.
She’s looking great 🙂
Katy looks amazing. I was swollen and sick through my twin pregnancy and just didnt enjoy any of it . Thank goodness for the amazing results at the end 🙂
Saw Katy on the Project last night and how great she looks and with a wonderful attitude – wishing her and Orlando happy times with their new baby.
She looks beautiful! Pregnancy sounds tough ! But all worth it at the end I’m sure!
She looks amazing and great tips here too.
Not had any children, just have fur kids.
she looks lovely in the photos
I enjoyed pregnancy. It was breastfeeding that I had lots of problems with. Long time ago now.
I do agree, Katy looks amazing through her pregnancy. I wish I looked like that when I was pregnant.
I also experienced swelling, but it goes away fast after birth.
She looks gorgeous and love the crop top on her showcasing the her bump. Yes I have heard swelling is bad when pregnant.
Katy looks radiant.
Twins is even harder!!
very true! it’s just temporary.
Swelling is very common, not strange.
She still looks great!
I didn’t know she was pregnant, oops! She looks great in that photo!
I carried a lot of water weight. I looked swollen towards the end. After I delivered all the water weight deflated.
I had a perfect pregnancy right up to week 34 when my legs and feet started to swell, but I didn’t think it was unusual because I knew a lot of women who had suffered with swollen feet and legs during their pregnancies.
Its NHS BeautyHeaven, not NSH – National Health Service – small typo 😉
She looks amazing – I looked like a whale I retained so much fluid in pregnancy and my normally size 9 feet (admittedly large) were still wearing my husband’s size 14 thongs when we came out of hospital a week after giving birth and for a few months afterwards still! 😮
Yes , I experienced swelling too.
I think she looks gorgeous , that outfit is so funny , quite typical for her 🙂
Never had children… Sounds uncomfortable on all levels… But worth it, no doubt…
Swelling occurs in hot weather too
Not long to go now Katy.
Can’t wait to see a baby pic
She is beautiful always.
She still looks amazing
She still looks good though
I don’t have children. She looks good though.

Looking good Katy – it’s pretty standard to have swollen feet – when I was expecting my feet puffed up so much I could hardly get them into knitted slippers!
