Learning how to embrace make-up in your 50s

Hanging out with girly girls for more than ten years has finally started to influence my beauty regime. It’s true: I’ve been well and truly ‘girled’ – in a very good way.

When I walked into the office the other day, the lovely bh ladies complimented me on how I refreshed I looked after a two-week break, but more specifically, on my eyeliner. Yes, you heard it right – eyeliner!

Working alongside a bunch of gorgeous and talented gals who LOVE beauty has rubbed off on me. I have a newfound cosmetic swagger that comes with the confidence of knowing the benefits of a primer and understanding the difference a lip liner can make. And, of course, it helps that I have several of the best of them at my disposal.

My current favourites are the Clinique Cream Shaper eye pencii in Cobalt, Burberry Fresh Glow BB Cream Dark No 3, and Guerlain Brown Eyebrow Pencil (which has a fancy brush on the end for finishing and shaping).

I still say things like, “What’s that sparkly stuff you put on your cheek bones?”, which often results in a rolled-eye response from around the office before they chorus, “Illuminator, Jackie!” But now, thanks to my newfound ‘girlness’, I listen really hard to the answer – and then I go and get the product that’s intriguing me so much.

The next step is learning how to use it. Luckily, I’m in a great spot to get the best expert tips.

Make-up bag full of very clever products? Tick. Application skills? Well, I’m getting there!

But even without watching all of bh’s best how-to tutorials, I’m already seriously ‘girled’. It happened without me even realising it, and you know what? I’ve realised I do have a deep love of beauty products – who would have thought?

JACKIE’S TIPS FOR EMBRACING BEAUTY

1. Notice the things you like about your girlfriends’ make-up and ask them what products they use and how they achieve the look.

2. Just keep it simple. Don’t do bold lips, bold eyes and bold cheekbones all in one go and terrify your nearest and dearest!  Rather, slowly start experimenting with one feature at a time. Make only one major change, and keep the rest of your look subtle and natural.
