What comes first: makeup or getting dressed? If your answer was makeup, you’ll understand the all too real pain of having foundation transfer onto your collar, no matter how hard you try to avoid it. While there are plenty of great tips for getting makeup stains out of clothes after the fact, the real technique we want to master is: how to avoid them from happening in the first place.
Luckily for us, TikTok has come through with answers yet again and makeup artist Rachel Nugent has demonstrated her simple one-step hack for avoiding makeup-to-clothing transfer.
And the best part? The only product it requires is likely sitting in your cupboard already.
How do you stop makeup from transferring onto clothes?
Well, if you’ve watched Rachel’s very convincing TikTok, you’ll find the answer lies in none other than a can of hairspray.
@rachynugent Seen this on Olivia jade Atwood stories !! Wish I knew this trick sooner 🥲 #fyp #fypage #oliviajadeattwood #tiktok ♬ original sound – Rachel Nugent
Not only will this unsuspecting hair product repel humidity and flyaways, it will also repel makeup stains and fake tan. Rachel began by laying out a crisp white shirt and spraying its collar with Schwarzkopf’s Got2b Glued Hairspray ($14, Woolworths).
However, she assures viewers that this hack doesn’t require any specific brand and any hairspray will do the trick.
“It doesn’t feel sticky, I thought it would, but it was totally fine,” she noted.
Just as she first said, Rachel’s white shirt remains totally free from stains as she checked in throughout the day.
TikTok users (who are notoriously hard to impress) we’re labelling this hack as “witchcraft”. One user said, “I wish I had this info for my daughters school blouses” and another called it “game-changing.”
Couldn’t agree more, this is a hack to remember.
Do you often get makeup on your white shirts? Will you try this hack?
I tried Vanish, it works most of the time.
Sometimes this is a problem. You need a good stain remover??
What a great hack!
Nooo, what! This is super cool =D
Wow! This is a great hack!
Wow this sounds so easy
Great hack. I will be trying this.
Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I think I can still see a foundation/tan mark up around her collar. (Although it could be the way my screen is tilted; currently sitting up in bed typing this.)
I thought so too!
Same
Debbie Downers are underrated. We need facts.
I thought there was too! Maybe it was from before she started using this trick?
I see it too
I’ll have to try it out myself to see if it works
What a fantastic Tip regarding using Hairspray on your clothes to stop Foundation Stains on your Clothing 👋👋👋👋👋👋
I have more of a problem with sunscreen than makeup. I’ll definitely be putting this to the test.
Great hack, definitely something I will be trying.
Nifty tip. Wonder if would work for underarm stains too?
yes makeup on white collars is not good
Makes sense! Like a thin plastic shield!
Finally TikTok gives us a GOOD hack! Will definitely be using this one.
Yesss! Will have to give this a go
Might be a good idea. But would the chemicals in the hairspray affect the quality and longevity of the fibres of the material of the shirt?
But does it damage the clothes in the long term?
I would definitely try this.
I don’t wear white or that much foundation so not an issue. Hate it when you try clothes on in a shop and other people’s make up is on them. Gross.
So going to try this wonder if it actually works
This happens with tshirts too, they get so discoloured around the neckline
Great idea
I’d be worried the hairspray could damage my clothing
A simple and fantastic tip, be great to try.
Oh wow, im going to try this next time i wear a white shirt/top
