7 make-up trends to try this spring

The arrival of spring brings with it a newfound sense of energy and enthusiasm. Thanks to all that warm, sunshine-y goodness and flowers blossoming, it’s a time when we all feel invigorated and inspired.

It’s also a great opportunity to push those same ol’ make-up techniques to the side, and try something new.

SEA BLUE AND GREEN EYE MAKE-UP

Okay, so Exhibit A on the left might be a bit intense for an everyday look, but the Deep Sea Goddess look on the right, created by Priceline Beauty Director Rae Morris for the Festival of Beauty, makes the trend a lot more wearable.

Along with wearing your jeweled blue or green tone on your inner water lines, you can also try applying it to your top lash line – just be sure to keep the colour close to the lash line.

Try:

Australis Gelifeye Gel Eyeliner in Blueberry Breeze
Max Factor Wild Shadow Pencil in Bold Sapphire
Laura Mercier Chrome Extravagance Eye Chrome in Blue Steel (use wet for a foil effect!)
Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner in Jade
Rimmel London Scandaleyes Eye Shadow stick in Blamed Blue
jane iredale Mystikol In Aquamarine

LUMINOUS SKIN

While contouring is definitely having a moment, glowing, radiant skin (without a hint of those contouring shadows) is fast becoming spring and summer’s biggest beauty trend – partially thanks to ‘strobing’, which is taking the Internet by storm.

There are a few ways you can go about creating a luminous complexion. You can either use an illuminating primer under your foundation, or mix a liquid illuminator with foundation for a subtle ‘lit from within’ result. Alternatively, you can use a highlighting powder, cream or liquid on your skin, making sure to focus on your cheekbones and temples, the middle of your nose, your cupid’s bow, and a touch on your chin.

When deciding which formulation to choose, Rae Morris suggests matching it to that of your foundation or base. So for instance, if you use a liquid foundation, go for a liquid illuminator.

Try:

TheBalm Mary-Lou Manizer
NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator
Clinique Up-Lighting Liquid Illuminator
Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick
Essence Soo glow!

70s BEAUTY

According to model and Macquarie Shopping Centre ambassador, Elyse Knowles, this is the trend to look out for this spring/summer. She says, “The 70s trend is massive this season. Bring on the flares, big sunnies, tan, suede, light denim, pleats and big curls!”

How can you give your beauty look the 70s twist? Say goodbye to your pale winter complexion and give your body and face a boost with a faux glow. Then, illuminate your eyes with some shimmer in the inner corners, keep those brows bold and a little unkempt, and rock your best Farrah Fawcett curls (or hippy-esque waves, as worn by Queen Bey above).

Try:

Bourjois Little Round Pot EyeShadow in Biege Illuminator
IT Cosmetics Brow Power

AN ORANGE-RED LIP

Nothing says summer’s comin’ quite like this bold, vibrant hue. Pair it with lashings of mascara, some winged mascara, and a bronzed complexion. If you’re on the fair side, start lightly with your bronzer and slowly build up the colour.

Oh, and if the colour is too out there for you, start by applying one light layer and dabbing at your lips with a tissue – this will make it more of a stain.

Try:

Estee Lauder Limited Edition Pure Color Envy Matte Lipstick in Restless (it’s the actual shade Kendall’s wearing here!)
MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger
Maybelline New York Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lip Color in Rose Rush

NEUTRAL SHADOW

Low-key ladies, rejoice! Because this season is all about eyeshadow in browns and neutrals, you can make it as subtle or strong as you’d like.

For an everyday look, opt for a light coloured matte hue. To amp up the glam factor, use a shimmery brown, or try building up the colour for a darker finish. Um, and a brown-based smoky eye? Heaaaaven!

Try:

Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Shadow in Natural Nude
Laura Mercia Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Amythest
Eye of Horus Isis Sun Goddess Palette
L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Les Ombres Eyeshadow Quads in Timeless Beige

SUPER-ENHANCED LASHES

You know how you try to avoid lash clumping? Well, you may want to ditch that habit and give this throwback-to-Twiggy trend a whirl, because, boy, does it make your eyes pop!

The key is ensuring your lashes don’t clump randomly, but rather that your lashes are grouped together in a uniform fashion. A lot of mascaras are clump-free these days, so try pinching together three or four lashes when your mascara is still wet – just be careful where your hands go after. Oh, and remember to curl your lashes beforehand!

Try:

Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils
Australis Multi Mega Lash Mascara
ASAP Pure Mineral Mineral Mascara
Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara

BARELY-THERE LIPS

The whole ‘no make-up’ make-up trend goes a step further with this lip look.

Perfect for the low-maintenance gal, this trend is all about having your lips look like, well, your lips. Nothing fancy. Invest in a good lip balm to keep them soft and supple, and spend some time enhancing your other features to balance your bare lips. Bold brows and flushed cheeks will leave you looking au natural and flawless.

Try:

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant
Lanolips 101 Ointment
Carmex ® Moisture PlusUltra Hydrating Lip Balm
Designer Brands Longwear Matte Lipgloss in Stayput

Which one of these trends are you most likely to try? Are you nervous about giving any of them a go?
