As anyone with hooded eyes can attest to, applying eye makeup can prove a tricky task. And keeping your eyeliner in place without smudging or creasing? Almost impossible. But thankfully, celebrity makeup uptist Sir John is here to save the day.
There’s no one we trust more than the man behind Beyoncé’s best makeup looks. And Sir John recently sat down with Fashionista to reveal all his makeup secrets for hooded eyes – and you best believe we took notes.
Here, a step-by-step guide to perfecting hooded eye makeup.
Sir John’s makeup tips for hooded eyes
First thing’s first: finding your natural eye crease. “Whenever you look in the mirror… bring your chin down a little bit more so you can see where the natural crease would be,” Sir John says. “Wherever your lash line stops when you’re looking the mirror, you’ll see that’s the natural crease you want.”
And now we’ve got that covered, it’s time to create…
Step 1: Create your canvas
All good eye makeup looks start with a perfectly smoked lash line. But don’t pick up your trusty black liner just yet. Sir John suggests using a matte eyeliner deeper than your skin tone – preferably waterproof to avoid smudging or creasing.
Think of this step as contour for your eyes. Sir John explains that the best technique for hooded eyes is to focus on creating shadow, rather than brightening or highlighting. Using a neutral-toned liner, rather than black, will create the illusion of deeper-set eyes.

Step 2: Smoke it out
Now you’ve sketched out your canvas, use a dense shader brush to blend the eyeliner up to your natural crease. For more definition, focus on smoking out the outer corners to create more shadow.
And remember: your lower lash line is key to making the look pop, so feel free to add some colour! As Sir John says: “Don’t be afraid to maximise the lash line at the bottom, creating a little bit of drama. The goal here is to give your eyes a silhouette.”

Step 3: Add some colour
This is the time to unleash your inner (makeup) artist. For an everyday look, stick to neutral browns and bronze hues, focusing on the outer edges of the eyes. “This outer V on someone who has a hooded eye is one of the most charming areas to look at,” adds Sir John.
If you prefer a bold look, Sir John notes that deep, cool tones such emerald, navy blue and purple will enhance the illusion of deeper-set eyes. And don’t forget to add a touch of shimmer to your inner corners or the centre of your eyelid to really make your eyes pop.

Do you have hooded eyes? What is the best hooded eye makeup tip you’ve learned?
I just put the Smudge Shadower Liner Brush on my Mecca wish list and found out that it is quite affordable. I also like the look of the Revlon teal eyeliner.
Sometimes Mecca is not bad in price. Nice to shop there as well. Lovely shop and good customer service
Lots of lovely products, I still have not tried a CT product
I don’t have the patience for this.
Nope, neither do i
I would probably make a mess of all of this but really clever.
You read my mind!
I don’t have hooded eyes but still great tips!
Quite nice to share that.
This style is hard to DIY
I don’t have hooded eyes and still have not figured out the challenges of doing make up without my glasses. I just would not cope with all the steps…
That would be so hard .Keeping it simple is a lovely look though.
I don’t have a hooded eye
He didn’t mention the most important thing! Eye primer! Hooded eyes need primer!
Yes, I was surprised that he omitted primer, too.
Clever and I love the information. Eyeliner in a darker shade than your skin is one tip I am going to try.
I go very minimal with eyeshadow so that it’s just a hint of colour.
I used to wear eyeshadow all the time but have given it away. I guess I have become lazy. Not good
That is a nice look .I like minimal.Simple is often the nicest look.
Too much work for me
