Everyone wants their makeup to last for eternity. Or at the very least, until the end of the day. After all, there’s nothing worse than sitting across the table at a first date and wondering whether your concealer has begun to wear off. Or arriving to the wedding reception worrying if your bronzer needs a touch-up.
So why not just practice the ol’ set and forget method by spritzing your finished makeup look with a long-lasting setting spray. Oh, and while you’re there, make it one that’s been infused with skin-loving ingredients to ensure you’re hydrating your complexion at the same time.
What is makeup setting spray?
Consider a makeup setting spray to be like a hairspray for your face. It works to lock your final look in place and prevents it from fading. The only difference? A setting spray is actually formulated for your face and won’t stick your eyelashes together.
And no, hairspray is not an equal swap if you’re ever caught short.
Is there a difference between ‘setting’ spray and ‘finishing’ spray?
Most ‘setting’ and ‘finishing’ sprays are designed with a similar goal – to make your makeup last longer. However, they do this in very different ways. Makeup ‘setting’ spray is formulated to be budge-proof and keep your makeup right where you left it, while ‘finishing’ sprays are typically used to moisten the skin.
Therefore finishing sprays are more commonly used to ‘reset’ makeup during the day to prevent any cakeiness and keep it fresher for longer. So while it may not increase longevity per se, it can mean less touch-ups as the makeup stays hydrated and fresh, especially if your skin is on the drier side. Some makeup artists and beauty vloggers also like to spritz their eye brushes with finishing spray, to moisten and deepen the pigment of their eyeshadows.
Should you be using a makeup setting spray?
Like most makeup products, using makeup setting spray is really up to your own personal preference. Though they’re often not required every day, a setting spray can be a great addition when you’re headed to a day-to-evening event, a wedding, music festival or any occasion when you really need your makeup to last.
How do you use a makeup setting spray?
To apply your makeup setting spray, wait until your makeup is completely finished. Hold it about an arm’s length away, then spritz and let the product fall onto your face naturally. There’s no need to rub it in, just leave it to set. The amount of pumps you need will vary depending on the product, but one to three is usually sufficient. You don’t want to drench the face, just lightly mist it.

Have you used a makeup setting spray before? What’s your favourite makeup setting spray?
I'm et to buy one of these sprays. I don't think I've seen the essence spray in store.
I’ve been looking for a new face mist to help keep my makeup in place. I will try the Maybelline product. Thank you
Not sure if the spray makes much difference but I love the Too Faced Peach setting spray.
Never used either. Don't need to but would be great for a wedding or function!
yes this would be something I would use on a special occasion only
the urban decay setting spray is incredible, i had never purchased a setting spray before and the lady at priceline recommended me the australis setting spray and i thought it was okay, but didnt realise how wet it left my face until i tried urban decay! it is actually incredible.
I need to invest in another makeup setting spray, I have not used one for awhile.
Adrianna55, two posts below, marked as SPAM!
currently looking for an affordable one for my sixteen year old to use (so she doesn't keep coming in to use my MAC rose one – which she has been going through very very fast!!)
And who wouldn’t want to use our MAC rose coloured lipstick.
sounds like a good birthday present for her and you can borrow hers.
Can you stil get these
I have never used as it just seems to be another product to add
I’ve always wanted to try the MAC one
I need to buy a setting or finishing spray. I dont have one right now.
I’d like to try the Nude by Nature one. I love a lot of their products.
I tried some of them, I wasn’t exactly impressed, so I gave up. The powder works better for me.
I’ve only ever tried the one from Nude by Nature
Mac prep and prime will always be my go to it always melts away that powdery finish!
I don’t have any of these sprays
I guess that if you need your make up to stay looking good all day then this would be a very good idea. Sometimes I barely have time to put on mascara let alone anything else.
I know what you mean Normap
Do not wear makeup, but have NBN spray. Will pull it out and use now
The reviews aren’t that great lol
Fantastic ones here I would love to try and thanks bh! a very helpful and informative read.
Perhaps I don’t wear enough make up to warrant this and once I am out I am happy just to touch up my lippy
I use the MAC and NBN ones a lot but the others look great too!
I’ve got one that I seldom think to use. When I wear NbN mineral powder, I don’t need anything because it always looks even better at the end of the day.
I should try my setting spray when I don’t have enough time to apply eye shadow primer.
I have used the Nyx and NBN ones before – wasn’t impressed.
I love these sprays, I have tried heaps but none of these brands
Have never used a Makeup Setting Spray before always wondered if they worked.
I use MAC Fix+
I’ve also used an Elf setting spray before and it smelt like vomit. Not good.
I have one but I usually forget it.
Not heard of this product, not sure I want/need them
I haven’t tried a setting spray before
I don’t use them.
I am currently using Nude by nature brand.
I’ve trued the Benefit one but to be honest, I haven’t noticed a great deal of difference between wearing it or not.
I don’t wear a lot of makeup anymore, but when I do I really want it to stay. Maybe I should experiment with these.
Im definitely more of a setting spray kinda gal
I have used the M.A.C Prep + Prime Fix before.
I have three including the M.A.C but I more often than not forget to use them.
I would like to try the Nude by Nature Natural Setting Spray.
ive been using mine but im not convinced they do anthing much for me
Always use one
I have a lot of sprays they are so good in the heat too
