This week in make-up class I was lucky to be working on a very special model… my mum! For the lesson we were instructed to complete an entire face, from start to finish, as though we were working on a mother of the bride (or groom) look. The stakes were high, brushes were at the ready, and I was determined to make my mum look as beautiful as ever. Here are the top tips I learnt from her makeover:
Mother of the bride top tip #1
When working with older skin, make sure to use minimal foundation and wipe off any excess. Heavy foundation can make fine lines appear deeper.
Mother of the bride top tip #2
Use soft, neutral colours on the eyes, just like the daytime eye look (link). Make sure you relax your forehead so the eyeshadow sits perfectly and doesn’t spread outside of the eye crease.
Mother of the bride top tip #3
Don’t forget to fill in the brows. My mother has light eyebrows and the difference made just by filling them in was huge. There is no need to go over the top and try re-shaping them, just follow the natural brow line.
Mother of the bride top tip #4
Black, heavy eyeliner can be too harsh for a mother-of-the-bride look. Instead line the eyes with a grey eyeshadow (which can easily be applied using a small angle brush). Start with the top lids and then line the bottoms if necessary.
Mother of the bride top tip #5
Choose a lip colour that isn’t too over the top and complements the eye look. Maroon, browns, nudes or even just a subtle coloured gloss will work well. For my mum I used a mix of soft plum with a brown to achieve the perfect shade.
Do you like the make-up I did for my mum? What kind of make-up did you have when you were a mother-of-the-bride?
