So what exactly is mineral make-up?
Mineral make-up is made from minerals and inorganic pigments that exist in nature. Because of their natural origin, minerals are gentle on sensitive skin and can work as an anti-inflammatory. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are also beneficial in guarding against sun damage, giving the skin instant, broad-spectrum sun protection.
While mineral make-up in its purest form (made from 100 per cent minerals) is suitable for sensitive, rosacea and post-operative skin, some mineral make-up features a blend of minerals and other ingredients which can be less suitable for those particular skin types. It is important to check the label to ensure it is oil-free, non-comedogenic and does not contain talc and parabens which can irritate sensitive skin and clog pores. The absence of perfumes, chemical dyes and preservatives in mineral make-up also reduces the risk of an allergic reaction.
How to apply
Before applying mineral make-up, apply a light moisturiser and wait for it to dry completely. This is essential as it helps the mineral powder adhere to the skin. If using loose powder, swirl your brush (such as Minerelle Application Brush, $39.60 or Jane Iredale Chisel Powder Brush, $48) in the powder then gentle tap or shake the brush to remove any excess powder. Apply a light layer of the powder in small, circular motions starting at the centre of your face and working your way out towards the hairline, blending as you go. To ensure a smooth, even finish, only use a small amount at a time, building up a series of thin layers until you get the desired coverage.
