Margot Robbie is basically a red carpet chameleon, and although her stylist Andrew Mukamal certainly contributes to her ever-evolving look, Margot wouldn’t be who she is without her makeup artist Pati Dubroff.
Given the makeup artist’s ability to transform her A-list client into a living, breathing version of just about every best-selling Barbie ever made, we’d trust her advice for transforming our own makeup any day of the week too.
Pati recently blessed her TikTok followers with one of her favourite tips for stretching your winter lipstick’s purpose past the three coolest months of the year. So even if you’re stocking up on some cooler shades for the season ahead, you can do it in good faith that you’ll be using ’em year-round.
“[This is] how to turn your deep dark winter intense shade into the perfect moving into spring shade,” said the makeup artist in the video.
Use your dark winter lipstick as a lip tint and lip liner
“I’m taking this Rouge Coco Bloom in this pretty intense eggplant colour,” Pati explained as she dabbed Chanel Rouge Coco Bloom Hydrating and Plumping Lipstick in 160 WILD ($72 from MYER) onto the pad of her finger. “I’m going to put it on my finger and stain my lips — not getting too close to the edge.”
“Now I’m going to take a lip brush [and apply the same lipstick] as if it was a lip liner — I’m going to do the edges,” she continued, carefully tracing the perimeter of her lip line with the plummy hue.
Hot tip: If you love the colour of Pati’s Chanel lipstick but you’re not a big fan of the price tag that’s attached to it, we recommend trying these alternatives, which have a similar colour and finish. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Vampire Love ($15 from Chemist Warehouse) is our personal favourite, but Nude by Nature’s Creamy Matte Lipstick in 10 Aubergine ($14 from Chemist Warehouse) is a worthy dupe in its own right, and M.A.C Cosmetics Lustreglass Lipstick in Succumb To Plum ($42 from M.A.C Cosmetics) is just an absolute classic.
Apply a brightly-coloured tinted lip balm to the centre of the lips
After lining her lips with the deep, dark wintery lipstick shade Pati pulled out a tube of Chanel Les Beige Healthy Glow Lip Balm in Light ($63 from MYER); a coral pink sheer balm product.
“I’m going to take Les Beige Healthy Glow Lip Balm in this pretty pretty colour and I’m going to put that all through the centre [of the lip],” she explained to the camera.
As you probably already guessed, we know of a few lip balms with a similar vibe that cost a lot less than Pati’s pick. Covergirl’s Clean Fresh Lip Balm in 300 Life Is Pink ($5.99 from Chemist Warehouse) is the closest match we’ve found in terms of finish and colour, but we also really rate the glossy look of Lanolips Tinted Balm SPF 30 in Rhubarb ($14.99 from Priceline), and the bright pop of colour the Revlon Kiss Balm in Fresh Strawberry ($6.49 from Chemist Warehouse) provides too.
And there you have it; a “great lip stain with some lip balm that feels really nourishing and a good, deep, strong base” as Pati puts it.
Now, please excuse us while we mix all of the lipsticks and lip balms in our makeup collections together…

@patidubroff This is how I transition a deep winter lipstick into the perfect spring lip. 1. Gently stain the lips using your fingers. I’m applying Rouge Coco Bloom in 160 Wild, an eggplant shade 2. Define the edges of your lips using a lip brush with the same intense colour 3. Layer with LES BEIGES Healthy Glow Lip Balm in Medium to create a gradient lip stain! @chanel.beauty @welovecoco #chanelpartner #chanelbeauty #welovecoco #springlip #liprecommendation #lipcombo ♬ Little Happiness – Oneul

Would you try this trick at home?
I will be trying this lipstick hack.
Great tips, thanks for sharing.
Yes I will be trying this hack -WOW !!
I’ll definitely be giving this a go.
Never thought about using lipstick as lip liner!
Maybe a good idea?
Me too! Such a good idea
Ooh i want those Chanel balms
I do like to mix colours to get the right shade, esp of colours I don’t really like
Good to have multi uses for the 1 lipstick
I’m always glad to see those more budget friendly options!
I sometimes use lip liner all over my lips & then top with tinted balm.
I don’t actually like this look at all.
Tinted balms are the best in winter
Love this hack
Nice hacks.
That sounds like a handy idea.
I have a few shades I don’t like too
I love blending lippies, makes finding the perfect shade much easier.
I don’t like either of these colours but the hack is worth a try
I would try this hack.
