You won’t believe the stand-out trend from the Emmys

This morning saw some of the hottest TV and movie actresses taking to the red carpet for the 2014 Emmy Awards.

And while we saw frocks in all different colours of the rainbow, there was one make-up trend that really stood out across women of all ages.

That trend? The nude lip and detailed eye combo.

It’s a pretty classic move and a smart choice for something as prestigious as the Emmys. Plus, it’s the kind of make-up combo that won’t interfere with any dress shape, colour or hairstyle of choice. And while a nude or natural lip does sit on the more subtle side of the make-up spectrum, it doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be boring. Especially when teamed with a classic eye look.

You could follow Giuliana Rancic’s lead and pair your nude lip with a thick, black wing and lashings of mascara, or you could pull a Debra Messing and Kate Mara and give your look some edge with a sultry smoky eye. Kristen Wiig complemented her glowing and natural look with some beachy waves, while Heidi Klum took to her gold eyeshadow to give her eyes a shimmery and radiant finish. Master’s of Sex’s Lizzy Caplan and Girls’Allison Williams both made the excellent decision to give their brows supreme definition, which is a really great way to balance your nude lip and ensure that the hue doesn’t wash you out.

Point is: a nude lip can be worn in a multitude of ways – none of which are boring – and the ladies of this year’s Emmys red carpet proved that again and again. To all of you, I say a big bravo for bringing one of the most underrated lip colours into the limelight.

Oh, and props to Claire Danes, Lena Dunham and January Jones who totally bucked the trend and went all out with vibrant red pouts.

Which Emmys make-up looks is your favourite? Would you wear a nude lip or red lip for a big event?
