They can’t exactly take advantage of our best beauty offers, so what can women in prison do to look pretty?
Well, as it turns out, quite a lot.
Some prisons offer inmates access to real make-up, but many women go even further to improve their look while incarcerated, with pencils, lollies and even M&Ms being used to add a bit of colour.
Speaking to SMH, Simone Weichselbaum from US publication The Marshall Project has uncovered a number of clever prison DIY beauty tricks:
• For personalised foundation, just add coffee to regular face cream
• For a DIY hair gel, soak Ranchers (American lollies) in hot water and then mix with body cream
• To make eye shadow, break open coloured pencils, crush them into powder and then blend with baby powder
• For a lip and cheek stain, use the colour from an M&Ms shell (blended with water). Oh, and the peanuts inside can be added to face cream for a ‘protein face mask’
• To add a flush of colour to cheeks, use baby powder as a base, then rub a pink-coloured newspaper ad on cheekbones
Some might think that these women have forfeited the right to look attractive – while others might argue that feeling pretty is a woman’s basic human right.
