We all have our own favourite lipstick shade. Whether it’s a colour-converting ‘your lips but better’ or a ‘90s nude, there’s typically one quirkily-named lippy that springs to mind when discussing our go-to shade. It’s often an extremely unique and personal shade that we’ve hand selected for ourselves, too. Unless, of course, the lipstick shade sitting in the bottom of your handbag is M.A.C’s Chili ($30, M.A.C). In which case, you were one of 2.4 million people who purchased a bullet last year.
While you might be bummed that your ride-or-die lipstick shade isn’t as unique as you’d once hoped, it’s a marvel that your impeccable taste allowed you to find the exact shade that has been MAC’s best-selling product across 18 countries. Seriously impressive.
If you hadn’t already guessed from the name, ‘Chili’ sits under M.A.C’s extensive red lipstick range. However, unlike the brand’s other cult-favourite lippy, ‘Ruby-Woo’ (which offers a vibrant blue-based red), Chili is made up of brown and orange undertones.
So, what makes the shade Chili so universally appealing?
It’s the lipsticks’ casual, warm and no-shine finish which has earned it the reputation of being an incredibly wearable, everyday red.
“The mix of colours makes it much less intimidating than a traditional blue-red lipstick,” makeup artist Allan Avendano told allure.
There we have it. Our hunt for the perfect red lip is officially complete.

Do you have a favourite red lipstick? If so, which is it?
Looks like a great colour – but so hard to choose a shade when there are so many fab ones!
Yes I agree and you really need to try so you can see if it works on your skin and clothing colours
My thoughts exactly!
Very pretty shade but I need a cool red, so this one would not suit.
I’m a nude lippy girl 💋
I like the colour but it probably wouldn’t suit my skin tone. I prefer softer pinks.
I don’t often wear lipstick, it looks nice though.
I’m a berry person. Anything with some purple tint. Plum. Etc. Not reds. Not nudes. Never browns.
It’s such a beautiful colour!
I love the look of Chili -red but not overwhelming and warm
I love this shade too,but i am also very partial to a nude lip,and MAC “Blankety” is a fave.
MAC makes some beautiful Lipstick Shades, the Chili Shade is still to dark for me. But I love there Nude Shades like Honey Love, Velvet Teddy, Kinda Sexy.
Lovely shade!
I can’t handle warm tones with my complexion. I favour those bright blue-based reds & pink-reds.
Red lipstick doesn’t suit me, it looks ridiculous.
I love a good Nude lippy because it goes with just about everything I wear. That’s not to say I don’t wear other colours.
I prefer blue reds, this one looks orange red. It’s a shame that I can’t wear much lipstick due to mask wearing where I live. I can wear it, some brands rub off onto the mask.
Most of us the problem with having to wear a mask, but I must admit that I usually buy blue reds as well.
I like the shade but don’t think it would suit me. Prefer a little less colour and more natural.
Beautiful colour but my skin looks better with brighter shades
Never tried this shade.
I’m not a fan of red lipstick on me.
Not my type of colour at all, I steer well away from anything brown or orange. I lean toward purple, pink, blue red.
Definitely not for me. I love MAC lipsticks but not this one.
What a lovely range of colours
I like my lippy a little more glossy. Not my cup of tea shade wise as I’m more into nude taupe or pink shades.
im suprised but i do like macs lipsticks
I thought Velvet Teddy was MAC’s most famous lippie?
