Ever snagged your shirt on a flaking, grown-out nail? It’s enough to turn you off a shellac manicure forever. But when it comes to our hair, there are plenty of root touch-up options to see us through to our next appointment. There are even tan extenders that can prolong the life of our spray tan. When it comes to our manicures, there’s not much that can be done to stop the colour growing out.
And as hard as we may try to stay on top of regular shellac appointments (perhaps you’ve even attempted to remove your gel-polish at home), there are times when a fresh manicure just isn’t fitting into the schedule. But now, thanks to Instagram beauty expert, Olivia Thompson (@omgartistry), there’s finally a (very sparkly) solution to temporarily manage grown-out nails.
How long until a manicure will begin to look grown out?
This all depends on the health of your nails. It’s typically recommended to only leave two to three weeks between manicure appointments. The bittersweet thing about having strong and healthy nails is that they will grow quickly. Though in every other situation fast-growing, healthy nails are a positive. However, when you’re trying to prolong the life of your shellac manicure, this can often become a pain point.
How will I know when my manicure has grown out?
When a manicure is fresh, the painted portion of the nail will meet your cuticle bed. As the nail grows, so does the distance between the cuticle and the painted nail.
Hack for concealing grown-out nails between appointments…
To begin, grab any glitter nail polish, though Olivia notes, “the chunkier [the glitter] the better.” Olivia uses a polish from the essie Glitter range ($15.99, Adore Beauty). Lightly dabbing the polish along the grown-out section of her nail (AKA between the cuticle and painted nail) she continues until the space is sufficiently covered.
And voila! Not only have you concealed your grown-out manicure, but you’ve also added some glittery nail art in the process. Cute, plus it’ll work to seal down any flaking at the base of your nail.
However, this trick should only be used to tie you over temporarily. A safe removal of your shellac is essential for the longer-term health of your nails.

Have you ever tried this nail hack?
I love this, can’t stand the look of grown out nails it looks so tacky.
Yeah I agree with you Saffy.
I agree but it is quite expensive to have your nails done
totally agree Saffy86
I don’t wear shellac nails or anything like that, but it looks better than the grown-out look.
I agree Lisa359 -The grown out look is not good
How clever is this? I think it is a great idea.
Great idea, thanks for sharing.
I like it!
I do my own nails, but this is a smart solution for those who do wear falsies.
This is a good idea, I don’t do these types of nail so it’s chips at the top that is more my problem. I guess you could use the same solution.
yes I think that would work the same -very clever
Just glitter the entire nail!
I haven’t tried but such a good idea and it looks great
Oh, brilliant!
That’s actually a good idea!
This looks so nice!
Fantastic idea for Long Nails unfortunately I can’t get my Nails to grow at all they just break even when I am using a Nail Serum.
Try taking a daily calcium supplement. That should help.
I only have ever done my pwn nails, but its a good idea
Not into false nails. I prefer to keep my nails short and I really look after my hands.
No. But great idea to try.
The lengths we go to as women.
What a genius idea and it looks cute too!
Love this idea.
What a great idea!
Such a great idea! About to have a go right now.
Just put on a different colour nailpolish
Great idea! I don’t have them myself but this is very clever
Clever! But how much time does it take?
Also is it professional in the workplace?
Great, my comment is awaiting moderation again.
How much time would it take?
And also is it suitable for work?
Why don’t we get points for our comments that are awaiting moderation and once they are cleared and published?
nice hack, will definitely try it out 🙂
Never tried it but a great one, thanks.
It looks super cute! Love a bit of glitter polish.
I don’t wear shellac nails or any type of false nails however I like the look of this so much I may even give it a go on my unpainted nails. Worth a try!
A clever idea, but since I don’t use shellac manicures I doubt I’ll need it.
