The name ‘cushion compact’ has been buzzing around the beautyheaven office more than talk about Beyoncé’s Super Bowl half-time performance (sorry Coldplay, the queen totally stole the show).
But until the other day I was yet to try one, so in the video above I filmed my first impressions of the Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Cushion Compact – take a look to find out whether I think it’s worth the hype (and you’ll definitely want to see the before and after).

And if you have absolutely no idea what a cushion compact is, or would like more information about what it does and how to use it, National Makeup Director from Lancôme, Lara Srokowski, was kind enough to give us a rundown on the Lancôme Miracle Cushion.
Q. What is the main benefit of using a cushion foundation instead of a liquid or powder?
A. Miracle Cushion is an all-in-one liquid compact which you can use as your make-up primer, foundation or touch up. The coverage is lighter than a liquid foundation and it instantly refreshes the skin and perfects the complexion. It’s a good alternative to a powder if you want to achieve a natural luminous finish.
Q. What kind of coverage and finish does it give?
A. The finish is sheer to moderate with buildable coverage, leaving the skin with a natural dewy glow.
Q. What’s the best way to apply a cushion foundation?
A. For best results use the applicator that comes with the cushion compact. Apply the foundation in a tapping motion from the centre of the face outwards for a natural finish. For additional coverage use the applicator in a sweeping motion working from the centre outwards for a seamless result.

Q. How often should you clean the applicator sponge?
A. I would recommend cleaning the sponge once a week with warm soapy water or a gentle shampoo. I normally purchase the set of two extra applicators, which you can get from any Myer or David Jones store, that way you can alternate [between] your applicators [to keep them] fresh and clean.
Q. Who would benefit most from using a cushion compact?
A. It is best suited to someone who wants light coverage and a luminous finish.
Q. Can you use your own applicator tools with it?
A. Yes you can most definitely use a beauty blender or make-up brush to apply cushion [foundation], however for best results I always recommend using the custom-made applicator. The puff is designed to perfectly capture the right amount of product for an effortless application.

Q. We’ve noticed most cushion foundations appear darker in the palette than once applied, what tips can you give for picking the right shade?
A. When you first look at the cushion the colour will appear much darker than it will on the skin’s surface due to the cushion absorbing all the liquid. To ensure you purchase the correct shade I would recommend always trying a swipe of two colours on the side of your chin. The colour that disappears into your skin tone will be the correct shade for you.
