We’ve put together the best tips and tricks for applying makeup for ageing skin, to give you a glowing, youthful complexion.
Add facial oil to your primer
As you age your skin loses moisture and so it’s more prone to being dry, rough and flaky, which can make fine lines and wrinkles stand out. That’s why it’s really important to use a primer as it helps to fill in fine lines and wrinkles, and also to smooth out your complexion. A great tip is to add in a few drops of your favourite facial oil (I like rosehip) to your primer as it’ll help to replenish your skin and keep it hydrated. You can add a few drops to your moisturiser as well if you’re feeling extra dry. Simply use your foundation brush to mix the oil into the primer and then apply the product to your face with the brush. This means there will still be some product on your brush when you apply your foundation, which will help the product to glide on your skin easier.

Fix flakiness in a flash
If you have mature skin you’ll start to notice that your skin can get really dry and flaky in certain areas, especially when the weather is cooler. To fix this without having to take your base off and start again, spray a makeup sponge with a makeup setting spray and then gently dab on top of dry areas. This will smooth over any flakiness. If the sponge takes off any of your foundation, you can go over the area again with your foundation brush and a small amount of foundation.

Use a cream blush
Anyone with mature skin should stay away from powder products as cream products will always look more youthful and glowy. A great place to start is by swapping your powder blush for a cream blush. You can just use your fingertips to apply the product as this helps it to melt into the skin rather than just sit on top of, which can accentuate fine lines and wrinkles. If you accidently go overboard with product, simply grab your makeup sponge and go over it in dabbing motions to bring the blush pigment down.

Highlight correctly
If you’re concerned about fine lines and wrinkles you might avoid highlighting all together, but a great highlighter can give your skin a beautiful glow and will enhance the look of your complexion. The trick is to avoid powder highlighter and use a cream highlighter instead. Apply a cream highlighter just like you would with your cream blush, using your fingertips and pressing the product on top of your cheekbones. If you go overboard, use your makeup sponge again to tone it down.

Set your complexion without powder
Since powder products can fall into fine lines and wrinkles, making them stand out, you’ll want to steer clear of most powder products. But if you’re avoiding powder, how do you set your makeup so it doesn’t slide around your face? Swap your finishing powder for a makeup setting spray instead. A makeup setting spray will lock your makeup in place all day, without emphasizing dry areas or wrinkles.

will try mixing a little oil into primer, depends on the primers texture
I use a mist instead of setting spray to touch up or mineral powder. I don’t like having that much alcohol on my face, even if it is sitting on top of other layers. Very dry skin type here!
Great tip here Ethelinde! Thanks!
I love a good cream blush! Stila Convertible Colour in Peony has always been my go-to!
