Eye make-up is super tricky to get right. Too much and you can look like you’ve been punched in the face, too little and you wonder why you bothered in the first place. So we called in the big guns, make-up artist Hayley Dutton, to teach us some universal eye make-up tips.

Of course, we couldn’t let the opportunity slip by, so we had her demonstrate the tips as she whipped up a stunning autumn-inspired glitter eye on bh’s Sam. But don’t worry! Even if you’re not into this punchy, eye-catching creation – you can still use her clever tricks for any eye look.
HAYLEY’S TIP #1
When creating a make-up look that focuses heavily on the eyes, start with your eyes first and your foundation second. This way you can clean up any fallout easily and any mistakes can be erased without disturbing any other make-up.
bh tip: If it takes a few tries to get your eyeliner right, apply it before your eyeshadow, as it can be harder to rectify a black line once your shadow is on. You can always go over your liner again at the end, but it will be easier as you’ll already have a guideline there.
HAYLEY’S TIP #2
Start with a cream-coloured shadow all over the eye to ensure you have an even and long-lasting base.
bh recommends:
- Klara Cosmetics Matte Eyeshadow in Innocent White
- Arbonne Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Vanilla
- 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Champagne Eye Shadow
HAYLEY’S TIP #3
To make blending a little more seamless, use a medium shade in your crease (the groove where your eyeball ends, which for most also forms the line that ends your eyelid) first and blend, then add your darkest shade in a fine line in the crease and blend out.

HAYLEY’S TIP #4
To make your colours stand out even more, apply a light concealer or powder underneath your crease. That way any colour or glitter you apply to this area will appear more pigmented and bold.
HAYLEY’S TIP #5
When using loose glitter and pigment products, apply a mixing product or adhesive directly onto the eyelid. Then use the same brush with residual adhesive to pick up your glitter/pigment product and press onto the area.
bh recommends:
- Bodyography Luster Lux Glitter Pigments
- MAC Pigment in Reflects Copper (this is what Hayley used on Sam)
- Revlon PhotoReady Eye Art™ Lid + Line + Lash in Fuschia Flash (you don’t need an adhesive for this one, the formula sticks itself on!)
HAYLEY’S TIP #6
Use a small strip of sticky tape to pick up any glitter fallout (genius!). Ensure you stick it to the back of your hand first to remove a small layer of adhesive before applying to your face.

HAYLEY’S TIP #7
When applying false lashes, let the glue dry for a few seconds before adhering to the lash line.
Extra make-up tips!
Foundation – For a flawless finish use a small stippling brush and apply foundation to the centre of the face and blend outwards. Follow by using your fingers or a blending brush to press and buff foundation into the skin and pores.
Contouring – When contouring the cheeks, make sure the line you draw doesn’t come in any further than just under the outer corner of the eye as this will start to draw the face in.
Blush – Apply blush to the high points of the cheekbones, which creates the illusion of a higher more youthful cheekbone.
Lips – When doing a bright eye, go a little lighter on the lips. Opt for a soft nude so the eyes can do all the talking.
