TikTok Has Gone Into Meltdown Over This $7 Drugstore Mascara

If you don’t have the time to trawl through TikTok in search of the latest viral beauty product, allow us to do it for you. This time however, it didn’t take much scrolling before we came across the #essencemascara hashtag (which currently boasts almost three billion views). The Internet erupted when TikTok creators uploaded videos showing their lashes being transformed with this $7 drugstore mascara. And now? It’s almost impossible to get your hands on.

Oh, we suppose you want to know which mascara we’re even talking about? It’s the essence I love extreme crazy volume mascara ($7 at Priceline) . But like we just said, good luck getting your hands on it. At least until the next viral product comes around.

Is the essence mascara worth the hype?

Heck yeah it is. The mascara’s ultra-black and highly-pigmented formula combined with its extra-large applicator appear to be a match made in mega-lash heaven. As seen in TikTok creator @therobelifeblog’s video, three coats of the essence mascara left her lashes looking as though she had just glued a strip of falsies on.

Though the essence mascara has well and truly passed the TikTok test, what did our beautyheaven members have to say about the $7 viral sensation?

Some have claimed it’s a dupe for another popular mascara…

“This mascara comes in fun bright pink packaging and the brush is quite similar to Benefit They’re Real! mascara, making your lashes separate nicely and really stand out. The formula itself is inky black and does give the illusion of false lashes, however it is quite runny, takes a long time to dry and smudges very easily. However, At around $6, it is worth a try.” – Ray

Some say you need to air it out…

“The only issue is that when I first open the product, the mascara is super wet and smudges everywhere. I find that for the first 2 weeks, it gets all over my face but after that, the fourmula does dry and becomes easier to use. Do not over apply this too because it is very easy to get clumpy eyelashes.” – Hdemi

Brace for a tiny bit of smudging (as with any mascara)…

“I’m currently using this as my everyday mascara and I have to say, it performs better than many other mascaras I’ve tried that I’ve paid several times the price for. It’s a true black and the formula is just the right consistency. The wand is straight, quite thin and the bristles are spaced out. Unlike Essence’s Get Big mascara, which has a much bigger wand, there isn’t too much product on the wand after removing it from the tube. I find when I wear it that my lashes are separated well and it definitely delivers in terms of volume. It does tend to smudge a bit but I’m yet to come across a mascara that’s truly smudge-proof.” – Kim478

  1. I’ll stick with the original Max Factor Masterpiece Mascara since I’ve been a teenager. Only mascara that works for me and my straight lashes. Not expensive either and made by the same company as luxe brands.

  2. Don’t like the big falsies look this mascara is giving the girl in the picture on the right at the top of the page. Do like the results it’s giving on the left because it looks more natural.

  3. I tried this mascara and I have to say it is a NO from me. I have oily skin and this mascara gave me panda eyes after a couple of hours just like all other cheap mascaras have done in the past. DISAPPOINTMENT Plus!

  4. Essence makes excellent, affordable products & I like that they’re all made in EU instead of China. Unfortunately, you lost me at the mention of smudging – no, not all mascaras smudge.

  5. I have this mascara in the limited edition Jurassic Park rose gold packaging, same mascara inside though. It is as good as they say. I cannot use it on my lower lashes though as it smudges there so badly. It is fabulous on my top lashes though. I will definitely be purchasing more.
