Carey Mulligan is definitely not unfamiliar when it comes to a makeup chair, which is probably why her (everyday-ish) makeup routine errs on the side of oh-so-luxe. Refreshingly, Carey however has ‘quite enjoyed’ that a lot of her roles haven’t required her to wear lots of makeup. Not only because it saves her time in the makeup chair in the morning but also because the focus on beauty in the entertainment industry can be ‘overwhelming’ and she’s grateful to step away from that. Although that’s not to say she doesn’t enjoy the collaborative creative processes when she does have to wear a ‘mask’ of makeup for a role.
With a great love for all things skin care, Carey claims that getting to indulge in her skin care routine gives her a sense of luxury, even buying herself a special skin-loving Oscars present (but that’s a story for another time). The stunning star (and mum-of-three) recently spilled her beauty secrets and showed off her ‘parent teacher’ makeup routine to Vogue.
Let’s be real, Carey’s makeup routine does not come cheap (coming to a whopping $784 and that’s not even including a few products). But, what we will say is:, luxury makeup products can definitely be worth the spend. And seeing Carey’s final makeup look, it’s pretty clear that the results justified every pretty penny.
Carey Mulligan’s Exact Makeup Products
Glowing base
When it comes to creating her luminous, lightweight and minimal makeup look, Carey opts for quality over quantity. But don’t worry, even her ultra-luxe routine doesn’t make her shy away from just applying everything with her fingers (relatable). For her foundation, Carey chooses the hydrating Chantecaille Future Skin Gel Foundation ($153 at MECCA) and uses the Sisley Paris Phyto-Cernes Éclat Eye Concealer ($145 at Sisley Paris) for the very few touches of concealer she actually needs. To finish her base, Carey gives her cheeks a very sheer touch of blush with the Valentino Eye2Cheek Eyeshadow and Blush ($73 at Selfridges). Unfortunately we don’t know which shade she uses, but Carey has been a fan of it for over a decade, so we’re pretty certain she’s not led us astray.
Brows & lashes
By far the area that Carey focused on most was her brows and lashes. Why? Because she’s a huge fan of big brows (and if she could she’d have ‘massive caterpillars’ on her face). To define her well-structured arches, she takes the Dior Diorshow Brow Styler ($57 at Adore Beauty) (a product we needed our magnifying glasses to identify) and goes against the hair grain. Saying that she feels that it looks more natural, and the colour actually ‘sticks’ to the hairs more. To finish her ‘on the way to bold’ brows, Carey ensures they’re fluffed up and glued in place (necessary) by using the Sisley Paris Phyto-Sourcils Fix Thickening & Setting Gel for Eyebrows ($95.04 at Cult Beauty).
For her eyes, she applies just a touch of the Chanel Longwear Cream Eyeshadow ($55 at David Jones) in a shade we really wish we knew more about (we’ll keep you posted if we find it), while labelling it as ‘nice’. Then she went in with a brown gel-pencil eyeliner (because she feels black is too harsh on her) to define just the corners of her eyes. And finally, she finishes off her eyes with a lick of Addiction Tokyo The Macara (unfortunately unavailable in Australia).
Finishing touches
Carey picked up a few tips and tricks on her latest film Maestro, which helped her transform back to that of a 25 year old. And that gorgeous glowing trick? The Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist ($81.60 at My Deal). Carey is convinced that you can’t actually overdo it when it comes to misting the luminous liquid on. Her next subtle skin refresh? Once she’s been out and about for a while she likes to spritz a skin-refreshing hit of Caudalie Beauty Elixir Face Mist ($86 at Sephora) to brighten her up.
And would any look actually be complete without a lip? We don’t think so, and neither does Carey, opting for a tinted (nourishing) balm so subtle that she can even get away with it on set. The beautiful hydrating balm in question? Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in ‘Bloom’ ($39 at Sephora) and yes, we did have to zoom really close in to find the exact shade of this one.
While we may be left with a few shade questions, we’re still eternally grateful to Carey for dropping her simple (yet elegant) ‘parent-teacher’ makeup look. Fingers crossed it was a positive meeting for everyone.

Did you like Carey’s simplistic makeup look? Do you use any of her fave products?
Love her hair. She has a really lovely face.
Yes she has lovely features.

Those price tags are certainly on the luxe side.

She looks amazing and if she can afford it why not !!
I agree totally!
Wow that’s pricey!
Yes indeed
If it costs this much to be simplistic what would a full face of make-up cost her?
Don’t ask lol
Bit out of my price range! Carey always looks incredible
I have no idea who she is.
That makes me feel better, @Onlyoni, neither have I.
Luxe products are so gorgeous
She’s cute but she looks a bit emaciated than in the past.
I don’t know her, and not familiar with the makeup
No way, not many could afford this
I’d splurge like that too if I had her wallet! 🙂
I guess her face is part of her job – it’s kind of an investment.
That’s a lot of money to spend to look like you spent nothing!
Probably not something i’ll be spending my money on. I barely put make up to spend this much
I don’t know who she is either but good luck to her if she can afford these products.
Another one I’ve never heard of.
