Thought for the day: beauty rules are meant to be broken. Now I know this isn’t an affirmation you’d expect from the sort of girl who swears you’ll be struck down if you dare bare your skin to anything brighter than your computer screen sans sunscreen. But I guess I’m feeling inspired.
As is my custom every New York Fashion Week, I’ve been staving off discontentment that I’m not grazing elbows with Chloë Sevigny in the front row of anything (humph!) by imagining that I am. While in front of my computer. At home.
And here’s what such glamorous googling has turned up…
If you’re already wearing insouciantly long and centre-parted tresses, no less than DKNY, Nicole Miller and Preen proclaim you officially in. Long ago mastered the smoky eye? Then smudgy interpretations in stormy grey, burnished gold and dirty taupe (diary note: M.A.C’s N Collection is out on the 8th with the perfect shadow shades) are already within your skill set. So nothing startlingly new there.
But if, like me, you’ve always lived by the lips or eyes rule, the new season’s going to take you to task. The arbiters of style have paired look-at-me lips and lids, and, goodness me, have they made it work.
Take the flapper-inspired sophisticates on Friday’s Baby Phat (snapshot left) runway as a template. Calling in cues from Clara Bow, mouths were painted precisely in show-stopping red and mulberry lipstick while eyes were framed in rich matte brown with a wash of antique gold glitter (okay, so you can’t see it here, but I’ve got the inside track. Just trust me). Meanwhile, in between, the highest planes of the cheeks were polished in pearly pink cream. Eyes and lips and cheeks!
And I, for one, love. I’m primed to do the Charleston in a pair of suede T-bars! Not to mention break that little beauty rule. Egad, I’ll be going out in glitter in the daytime next…
So good to change your look, even if its just a new lippie
