Leave it to makeup artist extraordinaire Bobbi Brown to uncover the best beauty hack we’ve ever come across. First, she gave us the best tips on layering SPF under makeup. And now, the Jones Road founder has uncovered the secret to hiding fine lines without using injectables.
“Fine lines have a lot to do with the texture of your skin and the formulas of the products,” Bobbi told Prevention. And don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing inherently bad about ageing and we live by the motto of ‘love the skin you’re in’, lines and all. But sometimes, it’s nice to have a few tricks up your sleeve to give your skin a youthful boost.
So what is the 66-year-old makeup artist and brand founder’s top tip for disguising fine lines? Let’s take a look…
How does Bobbi Brown hide fine lines?
It turns out the secret ingredient to disguising fine lines lies in skin prep. “The only way to hack the system is with the right moisturiser that will almost create a cushion in your skin so the long-lasting makeup doesn’t get in your lines,” says Bobbi.
Her go-to moisturiser? The Jones Road Beauty Oil-Free Moisturizer. In fact, she swears by the product for a lightweight veil, especially over the warmer months.

“I personally use the Oil-Free Moisturizer in the summer months, or the warmer months, because with humidity it’s a great balance from using a heavy moisturizer that’s pretty oil-based,” explains Brown. “If it’s oil-free it will give you all the hydration without the oil.”
So why oil-free? Well, you want your skin to be plumped and hydrated before applying makeup so the products don’t dry out your skin and sink into those fine lines. But you also don’t want to be too shiny (read: oily) – and that’s the beauty of an oil-free moisturiser. It’ll provide the perfect makeup base to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day without looking like a greasy mess.
Sadly, the Jones Road Beauty Oil-Free Moisturizer isn’t available in Australia (yet). But we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite alternatives to help camouflage fine lines…

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel

Powered by hyaluronic acid, this cult-favourite drugstore moisturiser is a dream come true for dehydrated skin. The lightweight water-based formula glides onto the skin to leave your complexion plump and fresh all day long.
“Absolutely awesome facial moisturizer. It is gel-based, it smells fantastic, it feels fantastic, it absorbs quickly into my skin and leaves it feeling super hydrated. It doesn’t make my skin oily/oilier, which is extremely important to me in a facial moisturizer!” – HDEE

Avene Hydrance Light Hydrating Emulsion

Blurring the line between an essence and a moisturiser, this hydrating emulsion will leave your skin feeling soft, supple and glowy for up to 48 hours. Spiked with Avène’s signature thermal spring water, it works to repair your skin’s barrier and provide an ultra-dewy base for your makeup.
“The white ’emulsion’ has no real scent and is very light. I found that the moisturiser applied easily and absorbed well. There was no greasiness or tackiness. Also, and most importantly for me, it did not irritate my sensitive skin!…It almost felt ‘satiny’ rather than moistened. I would also agree that the product claim that ‘Tightness ….[is] alleviated, leaving skin soft, supple and luminous.'” – KatherineLB

What does your skin prep routine look like?
A solution I could actually implement!
I love the sound of the Avene one. I have oily skin so I really should invest in an oil-free moisturiser
I think BB’s advice makes a lot of sense. A good moisturizer will plump up skin and reduce the look of fine line.
Serum and sunscreen in the morning.
I do like natural oils in moisturizers. Found gels to be uncomfortable, have weird finish and even ball up.
Since my skin is oily I use a gel or lightweight moisturiser like the one by Neutrogena
My skin can’t absorb multiple products, so in the daytime I only apply sunscreen & mineral powder, or tinted sunscreen.
Sunscreen is so important Musfortune8 and you are wise to focus on that first.
Sorry Misfortune8
Looks very nice
I have rather dry skin so none of those products would suit, unless I was in a very hot climate
Tempted to try the Avene one.
Primer makes all the difference for me.
Me too
I cleanse, serum and moisturise ever day as my skin is dry and needs lots of care.
I use a Neutrogena cream in the morning along with some other products so it’s nearly finished so will buy the gel one in the Neutrogena now to test it out. I do love the cream but it can become a bit tacky in the summer months.
Good article. Thank goodness we have alternatives available in Oz.
I personally use a serum, then a moisturiser with SPF then a primer & foundation mixed together in my hands.
Yes well moisturised skin will take makeup far better than dry skin.
I’ll have to experiment with what I have in my stash to see what works best.
I didn’t know what to do with the oil free moisturiser that a relative gave me seeing that I usually use moisturiser for dry and aging skin by Nivea. Now I know and will definitely give this a try in the Summer months to help hide my fine lines. Thanks for this article BH :).
Yes, a good moisturiser is great!
wow
Oo a nice selection of products, i dont have a skin prep routine honestly
Bobbi Brown’s top tip for hiding fine lines without using injectables is to focus on the texture of your skin and the formulas of the products you use. She suggests using products that have a hydrating and plumping effect, such as serums and moisturizers with hyaluronic acid. Additionally, using a primer before applying makeup can help create a smoother surface and minimize the appearance of fine lines. It’s important to remember that embracing aging is beautiful, but having these tricks can give your skin a youthful boost when desired.
Will look for the Neutrogena, hydro boost, it sounds great and a good price too. My skin is in need of extra hydration especially in the winter months
Embroyolisse as a hydrating moisturiser and primer in one!
I use primer. Currently use Nude by nature. I love it.
Not yet in Australia probably not a barrier to get hold of considering the international internet. Yay for that
I use moisturizer day and night
Interesting tip, I’ll need to try it
yes with the heat here, the less the better
