If there’s one makeup product that’s up for debate, it’s primer. Some of us swear by it, others skip it in favour of a hydrating moisturiser. But when it comes to mature skin, the benefits of primer cannot be denied.
Combining the best of skin care and makeup, a good primer works to lock in your skin care and set the foundations for, well, foundation. And there’s a primer for every concern – hydrating, plumping, brightening, smoothing, blurring and even mattifying.
So we’ve rounded up our favourite primers that will lock your makeup in all day long without settling into your fine lines or drying out your complexion. Here, the best primers for mature skin.
Best Primers for Mature Skin

It’s formulated with soft powders to absorb oil, veiling those pesky fine lines, pores and uneven skin tone. With over 250 glowing reviews, this bh-approved mattifying primer is guaranteed to become a mainstay in your makeup wardrobe.
You Say: “I often use Base Magique on its own without makeup as it gives a natural looking, improved texture finish with way less visible lines & pores. It also locks in hydration so your skin stays fresh looking all day. When I do wear foundation, I feel like a million bucks. The foundation slides on easily and the primer stays in place without being compromised.” – LG Kempin

Do you use a primer? What’s your top mature skin makeup tip?
I don’t use primer.
Neither have I, I like my moisturisers and not sure if I need a primer
Oooh I want to try the Clarins one – who wouldn’t!? Love Jatz’s review!
Thanks CCW. It really is a lovely Primer 🙂
My mature age make-up tip: experiment with some of the new wonderful foundations that have come out that include serums, expert hydration ingredients or other things like vitamins. There’s never been a better time in history to enjoy an amazing foundation for mature skin.
Their are some lovely light and moisturising ones now, nothing like the cakey stuff my Mum used to put on her face.
Not using a primer atm. A good skincare base works best for me.
I have’nt tried any of these but some sound really good.
I haven’t tried any of these either and what a big price range.
I don’t really use primer anymore
I used to use primer but it felt icky on my face
I don’t use one. But have tried and liked 2.
A good primer does wonders. I love the Benefit ones, but lately I’ve been using the Ultra Violette 3in1 and its amazing
I would love to give one of these brands a try.
The Kind one sounds lovely.
No primer, just a hydrating moisturiser.
Primer is an absolute must for me to even out my skin before applying my foundation.
I only use a primer for special occasions but don’t have a favourite. The Kind Collective one sounds worth trying.
id like to try some of these
My sunscreen works well, instead of a primer
Would love to try CT one!
The KIND Collective Blur Perfection Primer with Blue Light Protection looks and sounds nice. Will check it out at Chemist Warehouse to see if they sell it.
