As we get older, it’s natural for our lashes and brow hairs to become more sparse. And while mascaras and brow pomades provide an excellent temporary solution, a lash serum can help to restore length and volume more permanently.
Latisse is one of the most well-known eyelash growth serums. It was the first of its kind to hit the market with clinically proven results and is still the only one that is FDA-approved. Since Latisse, there have been plenty of brands (both luxe and drugstore) to launch lash serums in Australia. But do they really work…?
How do lash serums work?
Results will always vary when it comes to lash serums. But if you’re looking for one that will promote genuine growth, it will need to contain active ingredients. Ones like bimatoprost (found in Latisse), are usually only available via prescription and help to stimulate growth at all stages of the lash growth cycle.
Over-the-counter lash serums, on the other hand, typically contain amino acids (also referred to as peptides), which nourish, condition, and strengthen frail lashes. The latter, which are more readily available, help to maintain steady hair growth for existing lashes but are less likely to work for empty hair follicles.
Lash serums and eye sensitivity
If you experience any sensitivity with a lash serum, it’s recommended to cease use. Eyelash serums with active ingredients do have the potential to be irritating to the eye. Therefore if you suffer from sensitivity, opt for a serum that conditions and strengthens lashes without actually stimulating growth. These serums will still make your lashes appear longer and fuller without any discomfort.
The best eyelash serums to try in Australia
From clinically proven eyelash growth serums to lash conditioners that’ll nourish your natural flutter, here’s our edit of the best.
Freezeframe Lash Prescription
We say: Clinically proven to make lashes look up to 72 per cent longer and thicker, the freezeframe Lash Prescription features peptide technology to fill in sparse lashes and make short lashes appear longer. It comes in an easy-to-use pen applicator and should be applied twice daily as directed.
You say: “This product has been amazing at fulfilling all of my lash dreams! It is a lot more affordable than going to the salon, the tube lasts for ages as you only need the tinies bit of product per use and it works to grow your own lashes naturally. After more than a month of using this product I can already see the fullness and less fall out, so I am very impressed. The formula doesn’t irritate the eyes either. Very good results for me so far!” – Candyfairy

L’Oréal Paris Clinically Proven Lash Serum
We say: The L’Oréal Paris Clinically Proven Lash Serum is a gel-like formula designed to repair and restore damaged lashes. Whether it be from frequent makeup use, lash extensions, or fluctuations in the hair growth cycle, it helps to reduce lash loss and fortifies weakened lashes…all within 30 days!
You say: “I saw this serum advertised for half price at a chemist and decided to purchase it. I must admit I didn’t use the serum as often as instructed; I used it once a day, 5-6 nights a week and that’s it. However, after using it for a month, I have noticed a fairly noticeable improvement! My lashes appear longer and fuller, I notice them more when I look in the mirror. There appears to be more lashes in the inner corner of my eyes as well.” – Scarlet

RapidLash® Eyelash Enhancing Serum
We say: Peptides are front and centre in this lash-loving serum. But patience and frequent application will be key to seeing results in 30 days. The formula is ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested, making it a great one for sensitive eyes.
You say: “There is no stinging, tingling or irritation which was a pleasant surprise. After two months of daily use I can see the slightest growth, my lashes do seem to be a bit darker (not something that is advertised but I like it) and I have noticed that I have nowhere near as much eyelash loss as before. I can’t tell if I’m imagining it but I feel like my lashes are a little thicker, probably a result of less fall. I think this serum is good if you are patient, but if you want faster more obvious results then this probably isn’t for you.” – 2663anne

We say: As the most affordable formula on this list, the Rimmel lash serum is a great introduction product for those who are curious. It can be used on the brows as well as lashes, protecting hairs for stronger, fuller results.

The product itself is really easy to use and doesnt have an upleasant texture or smell either which is great. Have you tried a lash serum?
Used serum in near past. Worked after 3 months of use. Then when stopped using my lashes were mess again. One thing: you have to use serum with active ingredient that works (plain oils like castor do nothing) and use the serum non stop to keep the lashes
Sensitive eyes, none for me
Same here! Too scared to let them near my lashes.
I am sure they are conditioning
I have tried so many eyelashes that I’m so sick of them but when I saw my friend got longer eyelashes by using eyelash serum got me thinking about using eyelash serum for one last time and that eyelash serum became my one and only eyelash serum! “Nourishlash” really helped my eyelashes grew longer and darker so happy with Nourishlash I love you buddy XO
I’m not sure either but would love to give it a go.
I have never tried lash serum. I must say there seems to be so many products on the market.
I’ve never tried one before but would be open to trying it. My lashes are quite short and straight.
I have the Rapid Lash one and the hardest thing about it is trying to stay committed to applying it every single day. I do find that it does make a difference to my lashes though when I am consistent with it. My lashes have always been sparse – forget the age thing – short and straight and sparse – the 3 S’s for me lol
Used up another tube of RapidLash. Does work in making my lashes visibly longer, no more in number. As they stay on longer before falling out, they have more chance to grow in length. Shame it is pricy and has to be used continuously.
Never tried a lash serum. A bit cynical as to their effectiveness apart from moisturising lashes.
I don’t need a lash serum but I would benefit from a good brow serum
Me too.
Me three. 😀
I’ve tried some before but they didn’t work
I saw a modest improvement using that L’Oréal one. I’ve recently ordered the Covergirl & Rimmel ones to try.
I am getting Covergirl one too! CW has them half price off now. Liking the ingredients. And find rapid lash a bit exxy to keep repurchasing. Hope it works to add length as rapidlash did!
I’ve been wanting to try one but I have sensitive skin and eyes
Doesn’t Latisse have a side effect that causes blue, green or hazel eyes to change colour and/or darkening of skin if it happens to make contact?
I have long and thick lashes but my eyebrows are patchy!
I need to try one of these. I’m the only one in my family without gorgeous long, full lashes 🙁
I just don’t have the discipline right before bed to do it.
Thought same too. Then just keeping it next to my night face serum. Apply lash thingy then face things. Takes 9 seconds longer to do the evening skincare routine. Just takes patience as results are not instant.
i always use for a few weeks then forget so no piunt
I might try the Covergirl serum because I need help with my brows.
Interesting to hear about these.
No I haven’t tried any of these products. I remember when I was much younger I always used to use a wonderful little product made by Mavala which helped promote lash growth. I’ve not seen it for many years now so obviously they have ceased making it.
Mascara or be happy as they are naturally for me
some very different price points too
I’ve tried one in the past but it never did anything that I could see.
I’ve not tried a lash serum but I’d like too think I’ll give one of these a go.
I have used Mirenesse eye lash serum and it made no difference at all
I bought one ages ago but kept forgetting to use it! I might buy another one and be more committed
I definitely need some growth on my brows. Thanks BH. Shopping trip coming up.
I tried a brand once, not sure what it was called I’ll have to find it. It made my eyes so itchy after using it for 3 days in a row.. I’d say choose wisely with these things.
Lash Prescription is my favourite. Has definately worked on my upper eyelashes more than my lower.
Less breakage and fall out using this.
This makes me sad… Do we really need massive eyelashes???
I’m using the L’Oreal one mentioned and while I haven’t seen improvement yet I’m not having any issue using it. With super sensitive eyes that can and do react to so many high end products it is wonderful to use a product that might help without a ghastly reaction.
I would say a lash serum is probably the one product I’ve never tried, need to give it a go.
I would like to try that Maybelline serum.
I have not tried any of them. Luckily i got long lashes.
I didn’t realise so many brands had lash serums
I’ve tried one of these and it did absolutely nothing, I would’nt mind trying the 1000 hour one though.
Prevage made one but they don’t sell it anymore, maybe it didn’t work
In a different not, love the makeup look in the pic
I have only been using eyelash growth serum of dermalmd for about 1 month and can already tell my lashes and brows are getting thicker and longer. I noticed the thickness first. I use daily in the morning and at night. Highly recommend trying!
I’ve used the LiLash one which was good but very expensive
It is really Amazing product! Does not irritate the eyes or burn when applied. Latisse works GREAT for growing long thick lashes. I have been using it and have seen my eyelashes grow considerably.

After four months of use DermalMD Eyelash Serum I finally see a difference that I feel is worth the wait. My tiny eye lashes finally look long enough. Not ready to part with $$ for Latisse, and this give me a very nice, longer lash (but not fuller) effect. I use it each night, and use a mascara primer and mascara in the morning. Pow. Very happy
I’ve never tried any of these products. I’m a bit sceptical.
