These are the best curling mascaras to revive straight lashes

A good mascara will open up your eyes, add volume, thickness and length to eyelashes. A great mascara, however, will do all of the above and provide a long-lasting curl.

And while a lot of mascaras do boast in-built curling benefits, some formulas are light-years ahead of others. Whether they’re crafted with a curved wand or the formula is made lightweight to not weigh your lashes down, if it’s a curling effect you’re after, we’ve rounded up the best in the bizz.

Get ready for gravity-defying lashes…

Lancôme Virtuose Curling Mascara

We say: If your lashes are prone to falling flat, Lancôme’s unique CurlGuard™ formula will hold up your new sweeping length for 12 hours. Plus, the special KeepCurl™ brush is crafted specifically for added oomph.

You say: “It’s one of the best mascaras I have ever tried and after curling your lashes and applying two or three coats of this mascara, you will have perfect lashes the entire day. They look like you are using fake lashes but in the best possible way!!!” – Ms Jelena

essence get BIG! LASHES volume CURL mascara

We say: Thanks to the large, curved fibre brush, this curling mascara from essence promises dramatic length with minimal effort.

You say: “I love this mascara! It gives a lot of volume and makes your lashes look thick. And it’s SO affordable! I love trying new mascaras, but often go back to this one, just because it’s cheap and I know it works.” – Michie 2

Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils The Curler

We say: As far as mascara wands go, this one is up there with the most impressive. Not just because it is pink, but also because it is carefully rounded to help shape the perfect curl, plus it comes with an elastomer comb to lift, separate and define each individual eyelash.

M·A·C Extended Play Lash

We say: Consider this mascara like a temporary perm for your lashes. M·A·C’s lightweight formula will provide upward-ending definition, while the slimline applicator is designed to target every hard-to-reach lash, for up to 16 hours of wear.

You say: “ It’s long-wearing, it doesn’t smudge or flake, it doesn’t irritate my sensitive eyes, the petite slimline applicator makes it easy to coat every lash, and it’s easy to remove with warm water! “ – rosep

Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Mascara

We say: For curved, fanned-out lashes, Maybelline New York’s Sensational Mascara uses two different sized bristles to reach tiny lashes and create a bold, curved, clump-free curve.

You say: “The wand is perfect for what it’s supposed to do. Lengthens volumises and makes the lashes so fluttery and pretty. It separates the lashes very well. It curls the lashes as you apply with the curly wand.” – Lovebug

  1. I loved the brush on the Maybelline Lash Sensation, but I found the formula wet: it often transferred to my eyelids.

The BEST curling mascara I've ever used was Benefit Roller Lash, but it's pricey. I had Ulta3 Volume & Curl on my list to try, but I notice that it's no longer Bh-listed. Perhaps it's been discontinued? I'll put the essence one on my try list for when I use up my current mascara stash.

  2. There are so many good and so many bad mascara's out there. Some of my absolute favourites are no longer made.

Out of experiences with brands, Maybelline outshines them all regarding price vs experience.

  3. I used the Lash Sensational years ago. I thought I recognised the brush so I went back to check the review and apparently I loved it! I haven't repurchased it simply because I haven't needed to buy a new one since – too many GWP and goodie bags!

  4. I don't wear mascara daily, only when I go out. I do have the maybelline sensational mascara and I do like it. I curl my lashes before applying it though.

  5. Heated eyelash curler (use a lighter or hairdryer) and your favourite, probably waterproof mascara = curled lashes all day.
