Anti-ageing make-up dos and don’ts

Make-up application can be a breeze if you’ve got a perfectly smooth canvas and all the right features. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen to anyone. Ever. And it’s even harder when you’re getting older and you have wrinkles, pigmentation and sagging to deal with.

Which is why we sat down with International Make-up Artist Rae Morris and asked her to divulge her biggest anti-ageing make-up dos and don’ts.

DO

Find a celebrity who shares your age (roughly), skin tone, eye colour and hair colour. If a beauty look works for them, then it’s likely to work for you. And if you’re not sure if a make-up look will work for you, ask yourself if you ever seen your celeb match wearing it.

DON’T

Wear shimmery or glittery products – and this means eyeshades, bronzers, blushes and lipsticks. The shimmery finish will only enhance any lines and leave your skin looking much older.

DO

Invest in a matte grey eyeshadow. According to Rae, it’s the best eyeshadow shade and texture for women with older features and does wonders to make you look younger.

DON’T

Use powder foundations as they will settle into your lines and wrinkles and make them look ten times worse. Instead, use a cream or liquid foundation. The formula is more flexible on your skin and they’ll leave your skin looking more youthful.

DO

Find a foundation, BB cream or CC cream that’ll even out your skin tone. This will do much more to shave years off than trying to hide your wrinkles.

DON’T

Use illuminator – unless you have flawless skin. Illuminator can actually age your skin because of the shimmer, so it’s best to avoid using it.

DO

Use illuminator on the inner ‘v’ of your eye – it’s the only place where it’ll do more good than harm! Adding light and radiance to the inner corner of your eye will make your eyes look wider, brighter and more youthful.

DON’T

Line only the outer third of your bottom lash line if you have droopy eyes, as this will only make them look droopier. Either leave your bottom lash line bare or line it the entire way, making sure to soften the line by smudging it.

DO

Focus your mascara on your top lashes. The will lift and open up your eyes, making them look wider. It will help detract from sagging or droopy eyelids.

DON’T

Apply concealer on any under-eye pillows, as this will only enhance them. Instead take your foundation all the way up to your bottom lash line and then apply your lightening concealer right under the pillow.

DO

Fake your lip shape – it’ll make you look much younger! Instead of taking a bright lip colour to the corners of your lips, find the outer limits (the point just before your lips drop down) and take your lipstick to that point. You can also fake a rounder bottom lip by cutting the lipstick line up (instead of following your lip line.)

DON’T

Wear brown or orange-brown lipsticks, as they’ll make your teeth look more yellow. Instead, opt for neutral and just-a-hint-darker-than-your-natural-lip shades.
