Ah, the 90s. A time when there was nothing cooler than scrunchies, the Spice Girls, platform shoes, stick-thin brows, and of course, brown lipstick.
Well, guys, prepare yourselves, because that brown lipstick that was so quintessentially 90s? It’s back. Yep, according to MAC Global Senior Artist Nicole Thompson, we can expect to be seeing a lot more of the deep, earthy hue on the runways, red carpets, and even shopping aisles.
Let’s just take another look at the picture above to remind ourselves of how the trend looked back then.
Thankfully, this time around, there’s going to be less of that defined liner, and more of a modern twist.
According to Nicole, while we can expect to see more mahogany, berry, burgundy and chocolatey reds staining lips, it’s the texture of the lipstick and the placement that’s going to make sure this revival doesn’t flop.
These celebs have recently been spotted sporting the once-taboo lipstick trend and they seem to be pulling it off without a hitch:
So what are Nicole’s tips for wearing these hues in 2014?
“Give the matte, burgundy lipstick a twist by using a cotton tip to soften and blur the edges, really wearing it in,” she says. And if you’re looking for a more subtle effect, Nicole suggests mixing the deep shades with a gloss or lip conditioner to create a soft stain of colour.
Nicole also recommends finishing off the look with sheeny, highlighted skin to keep your beauty look refreshingly modern (and not a throwback tribute to Clueless).

Did you wear brown and burgundy lipstick back in the 90s? Will you revisit the trend?
I did it in the 90s, and will never revisit it!
I don’t mind brown lippy – it’s better than that horrible concealer lips trend. I’ll always prefer red, though.
Brown just doesn’t suit my lips, but i love it as eyeshadows and eye liners
